Default 2017 991 Non-MF to MF. Do I have to buy a whole new wheel?

I have a 2017 991 Non-Multifuction and would like it to have multifunction and even heated wheel if possible. Looking at Suncoast I noticed you can buy the new wheels with MF and heating but wondered, do I have to buy an entirely new wheel or can I retrofit buttons and tan module into my existing wheel if I forgo the heated portion?

Also what kind of wheel do I have? I assume just stock

If you forgo the heated option, yes, you can add MF switches to a non_MF wheel. I did it a month or 2 ago but wasn't exactly straight forward. In addition to the switches and wiring harness, some people (myself included) had to get an activation code from some Russian guy. Others didn't have to go that route but not sure why there's a difference. Read the post below for more info

Yes, if you forgo the heating option.

that looks like mine, GT sport steering wheel. I don't have heat but don't care as I store in the winter. it's one of the must haves that I looked for when I bought the car, I hate buttons all over the thing. I also love the PDK paddles, wouldn't do without them.

Okay I bought a control module and also switches. Now I think I need the switch covers for the back but Porsche SilverSprings doesn't think I need them. Can anyone provide me information if I do or don't?

Need? Depends... You can use your existing covers but you'll have to modify them to work - cutting a section out the top corners so it slips through the MF switches. If you don't want to go that route, then yes you need them.

Thanks @Got Bearings? , i was confused why Silversprings stated that they are not required and aren't different between non-multifunction and multifunction.

I just tried to swap my 991.1 Sport Design wheel for a 991.2 Multifunction wheel. Didn't work for me. Dummy me bought a manual transmission multifunction GT wheel thinking I'd be able to swap the PDK paddles into the MT wheel. No can do. The steering wheel case with paddles are molded in.

So, anyone looking for a GT multifunction wheel (with heat if you are so equipped), airbag, and gpsadapter modules to go from a 991.1 Sport Design wheel to a GT multifunction wheel, I'll be posting this kit for sale soon.

Well through RL Marketplace I found a local guy who had a multifunction controller that he gave me (nice member) to see if it'd work. I also found two buttons on Marketplace on here and then I ordered the back pieces. Yesterday I got got my triple square 12mm socket so I decided to tackle it today. Well it was a bit nerve racking as I'm always afraid I'll break things so I try to go slow and take my time. Got the airbag out, wheel off and started disassembly.

So my car is PDK, has the multifunction stalk and also has Sport Chrono. Funny the black control box I got from the RL member was part 95B.959.256.F which was the one that @Tier1Terrier said to get and the one that was in my car was 95B.959.256.F. Same part number. So I figured I'd just try to hook up the two control switches up to my existing to see if it'd work first. Well got it reinstalled and no buttons functioning. I went into ThinkDiag and coded Yes for the Value of "Coded Items: Coding value --Coding Byte1 - Multifunctional steering wheel but still no dice . So I'm going to take it apart again and try again with the given part above.

For reference here is the information for each control box:
  • Stock Original:
    • 95B.959.256.F
    • 308097810 - AC
    • 90155 - 023/001 R0
    • A1205 18.12.15
    • H03 G08S SW0501 PE0
  • New Part:
    • 95B.959.256.F
    • 308097810 - AC
    • 90155 - 023/002 R0
    • A0028 25.03.23
    • H03 G10S SW0501 PE0
Wish me luck!!

Update: Okay so I started over from scratch again but this time it was a easier since I knew what I was doing. Disconnected the battery, waited for 20 minutes, shut frunk, pulled airbag, removed wheel, took it in the house since it was hot in the garage. Removed the back plate and unhooked the control module and installed the "new control module" with the same part, put everything back together and went back outside. Plugged in the steering wheel, tightened the bolt, put the airbag in and then got out walked to the front of the car and then froze. I shut the frunk, no battery, electronic release. Damnit. So had to go grab the jump starter, pulled the fuse box panel and do an emergency frunk release. Got everything situated and got in and started the car. Boom it works! Checked my ThingDiag settings and played with the joker button. Not sure how it was "supposed" to work I fiddle with it and for some reason I expected that when you clicked the joker button it would bring up a menu in the MFD. Nope nada. Sat in the car with AC on reading through the forums and then it finally dawned on me to check the Vehicle settings to see if there was a menu for steering wheel and yup it was right there.

I'm so happy that I got this to work, would have loved to have had the heated steering wheel but for the cost I paid and the extreme generosity of another fellow RLister I'm over the moon!

Costs:
  • $140 for New 991.2 Multifunction switches
  • $115 for 2 back cover plates from Suncoast
    • $45 per side (L&R) with $15.5 shipping!
  • FREE control module, eternally grateful to @Rosie39j for hooking up a fellow Austinite!
