Default Do you trust service comments on CarFax?

Hi all, I can finally post here now as an actual owner of a 911, my very first Porsche!

I am wondering how reliable are the service comments are on the CarFax. I'm concerned about the oil, but the CarFax states it was changed a few months ago (and less than 300 miles ago). I checked the oil level today and it's fine. Just would like peace of mind that the oil has actually been changed.

I've attached the CarFax report.

I don't know that I'd trust Carfax as a guarantee of anything for service info. Apparently when my '18 Cayenne was totaled the random that bought it at an auction called me and complained about there not being ANY of that info in Carfax. (not my problem?)

So the fact that yours has that info, well, that'd probably be more useful than an absence of it? If you're unsure, one thing possibly worth doing would be an oil analysis.

carfax aggregates data from a ton of places, including dealerships and indy shops. it abstracts from that data to provide what you see on the carfax report. any number of line items on the receipt for services could fall into "oil and filter changed" including changing the oil and filter.

as above, if you're concerned about it give the dealership or shop a call. they'll have the actual records.

And if an oil change is all you are worried about... Change the oil. Very easy process and a good learning experience unless you plan on having your maintenance done by 3rd party. And also Welcome to the club.

I don’t trust Carfax for much of anything. When buying a used vehicle, I always change all the fluids and start fresh so I have a data point to base everything off of.

I don’t put too much faith in it.

Like any new to you used car I end up doing a bunch of potentially unnecessary PM type stuff just so I know…essentially start with a blank slate.

i wouldn’t worry about the oil change as I’d assume anyone that actually changed the oil would reset the oil life indicator. If the maintenance minder seems to jive with when you think the oil was last changed you are good.

Let us know what you find out. I guarantee you that Porsche Dallas did not falsify the data they provided to CarFax. Seriously. Why would they? what would be there motivation? It's all automated anyway.

it's less about falsifying information and more about carfax miscategorizing a line item.

The problem with Carfax is not so much what is there, but what is not there. If service is not reported, it doesn't mean it wasn't done, and if no accidents are reported, it doesn't mean there aren't any. Unfortunately, given that, the positive things aren't worth much either. Ultimately, you have to trust your own judgement, based on the evidence in front of you.

I’ve seen them not report stuff that happened. I doubt it would report stuff that didn’t happen, unless a bad actor (ie. Shady dealership) wanted to trick a buyer. I would be ok.
