Default Seat leather reupholster or replace

I had an unfortunate incident with my dog that scratched up my leather driver seat a bit. I had the car cleaned and the scratches are still pretty visible.

I took it to one place in town that is a full leather upholstery and repair place that's used by a number of dealers in town. They recommended replacing the entire bottom seat leather (circled in red). Apparently the leather is quite worn on the bolsters too and they said it'd be much more obvious visually if they replaced a single section of leather.

The said the issue is that they cannot source the exact leather porsche uses for the perforation. The have something that's very close but not officially the same. They can order the entire seats leather cover from Porsche. Costs $3600 before any installation cost. The upholstery of the bottom seat is gonna run $1100 for $2000 if I have them replace both seats bottoms.

Trying to figure out if it's just better to pay the Porsche tax or have them reupholster.

Looks like you'll be reupholstering. Perfect time to spice up the seats.

I love that look! It might be a little pricey though but I'll ask them to see what they think.

Something to keep in mind… I can’t tell from pics but If your seats are ventilated the fabric inserts won’t work and maintain ventilation. You could do it but Another option is keep an eye out for a used seat as replacement. I see them quite often on Ebay and parts suppliers.

Yeah unfortunately my car is heated and ventilated hence the perforated leather on the seats. The upholstery shop owner was confident he could replace it without breaking anything. I'm quite concerned about losing a feature down the line.

I'll browse ebay to see what I find seat wise.

I really like the custom fabric inserts but I also have ventilated seats…and not willing to give that up.

I’ve had great luck with interior parts on Ebay. Picked up a rear seat assembly (mine was also scratched) brand new OEM never installed for $600. Porsche wanted over 3k! It takes some patience though. Good luck!

I would think the air would be able to flow through cloth seats.

Yep, leather is a lot thicker so if it wasn't perforated, the air wouldn't be able to get through at all. When I'm wearing jeans, I can definitely feel the cool air through the denim.

Is there no way to reduce the appearance of the scratches? I recall once seeing a woman [Alisa Neal (I'm not certain of the spelling of her surname)] do a real time live demonstration on a very worn, abraded and cracked leather Recaro seat from an M-series BMW at a Gateway Tech Conference. She repaired everything, including matching the OEM color of the leather with a custom formulated dye that was applied in very thin layers to get a near perfect match in color and overall appearance. This was at least 20 years ago.

I'm also interested in a solution that focuses on corrective treatment of the existing bottom seat panel. My 2017 C2S has perforated leather 14-way seats with heating and cooling, and someone accidentally sat in the passenger seat on his large leather motorcycle wallet that was connected to his belt with a metal chain, resulting in scratches in the bottom cushion. They are much less severe than in the OP's car. The OEM Porsche perforated leather is not tough and scuff resistant like the leather in my Audis and BMWs has been, but those seats are not perforated leather nor are they cooled.

Take it to a professional. They can refinish it in a few hours.

From the pics it doesn't look too bad. Ask a dealer who they use to recondition used cars. Typically there is a person that shows up once or twice a week to re-condition the leather on trade-ins the dealer wants to re-sell.

I'll reach out to my service advisor at the Porsche dealer to see what they think.

I also managed to track down the part # for the leather cover: 991-521-161-44-GDC or 991-521-162-44-GDC

Have you tried seat dye, I cant recall what I bought but its kind of a gel like substance you rub on and let sit then buff. I had a similar issue with a BMW, black and bought some black seat dye and it did the trick on the seat and part of the steering wheel where someone scratched it with her nails

Don’t replace it-get the panel(a) re dyed. Dealers should have a guy-any dealer, not just Porsche. That won’t be more than a few hundred and will look like new.
