Default One step away for my first 911. Am I nuts or missing something?

Well if you have seen my threads I have been on the quest for my first 911. I wish I had unlimited finances like many of the members here however I don't so I'll get what I can comfortably afford. I live in Austin and it seems like all of the cars here are priced out of sight, probably because of all the tech bro money but alas I have not been able to find what I wanted in the state of Texas and have slowly venturing outside of Texas. Plan is that if I purchased a car out of state, my 11 year old daughter and I would fly out, look at the car, buy it if it feels right and have a nice daddy daughter drive home. Well I found a car however dang it's 1200 miles away. I found some other cars with lesser options and much less miles (11-12K miles) but they didn't have both Sport Chrono and Sport Exhaust. They actually wanted the same money as this car. Would have loved to have leather interior but at my budget it's hard to find in a 2017.

It looks to be in very good condition with full Paint Protection Film (PPF) on the front of the car and 4 brand new tires. Single owner car and a very clean CarFax. Also, I spoke with the Porsche dealership that has been servicing the car since new and the records are immaculate. It's had it's major and minor services done and only needs an oil change June 2024. It's in a smaller town and I cannot for the life of me find anyone to complete a PPI so I may just have to go drive, look and use my instinct because the nearest place that could do a PPI is about 3 hours away.

Let me know if you feel that this car is worth driving 1200 miles for and you feel it's a good, bad or neutral deal.

I know you're looking for a Sport Chrono equipped car and with PDK I definitely second that. 18-wat Sport Seats plus, sport exhaust, Bose, and the PDLS+ in black are all very desirable options. Full-leather is one of those options that I'd like but it doesn't change the way the car drives. Looks like a nice car.

Kind of like going to meet a puppy, flying out to "see" a car will likely see you coming home with it. Tell yourself what your number is before hand and stick to it. Then, enjoy the ride home with your daughter. Is there a better way to enter into 911 ownership?

I don’t follow the current market or visit Rennlist too often. It does look like a nice spec! I would imagine a price around the low 80’s is fair for that year and miles, but who knows what people want for a 911 these days. It seems like you are looking for reassurance on your first 911. Clear history, the options you want, and within budget? Go for it! I just took my 991 on a 2500 mile road trip through the Pacific Northwest and even rural Canada. Zero issues. I also wouldn’t hesitate to do the same trip with my 14 year old 997. I had a 996 about ten years ago. It had just over 100K and I would regularly go on 500+ mile road trips without any prep. My point is that these cars work just like any other car. You will be so happy when you get your first 911. I am excited for you!!!

I would say it's looking very good-to-excellent overall, and appears to be well equipped. I have a 2017 C2S in GT Silver with many of the same options that are on the car you are considering. You'll find those "cooled seats" work quite well and make a journey more enjoyable in Austin, area. [My daughter attended grad school at U of TX Austin!] I'm envious of your 18-way seats as they are more comfortable than the 14-way seats I have. Enjoy your purchase and your trip with your daughter!

I strongly suggest that you add protective wire screen grilles as soon as you can. Those front radiators are expensive and puncturing one of them via a rock kicked up by a vehicle in front of you as happened to me when driving my 2011 Audi S4 caused me considerable expense and a visit to the Audi dealership for a new center intercooler radiator. And I was fortunate that the coolant leak was slow enough that I was able to drive the remaining ~130 miles to my home; I learned of the puncture the next day when I went into my garage and found a large puddle of coolant on the floor.

I chose Zunsport grilles which are relatively easy to install without need of taking off the front bumper cover as is required with some other grilles. The Zunsport grilles for my car are designed to fit over the factory dynamic louvers without interfering with their operation. I've had them for over 3 years without any problems or issues.

I have almost the identical car but manual transmission. There is not a better color specified car. The silver and black is as classic as you get. Mine had 20K miles last fall for $96K with Porsche CPO. Prices have dropped but at the same time I bought mine there was a PDK local at a Caddilac dealership that went for $83K, no CPO, no new tires. Yea when I bought my 911 my goal was to pay for itself in two months using $400K. That worked out extremely well since I bought NVDA at $129, I did end up selling NVDA at $269 now at $450 but the 911 was paid for......

Looks like a really solid spec to me. Lots of nice options without stuff that would be considered very personalized, like different colored gauges or other ways to spend thousands of extra dollars on a Porsche. Did it have the water pump replaced? That's really the only common failure on these cars. I graduated from UT a couple decades ago. It's crazy how much Austin has changed since, but still fun. Just different. COTA was a great addition! And yet some things are always the same. Anyway... love that town.

As far price you are not paying over $90K and you wont get for less than $83K so what is $7K worth to you worse case. Mileage is "ok" I would rather see 20K miles BUT being a single owner adds value imo. If you over 50 buy it ASAP you not going to live forever. If taking a loan I would walk. These are toys, wait till you can pay cash.

30k miles over six years is only 5k miles a year. I know people who do more miles cycling. Honestly, cars that are driven more frequently tend to be better.

Looks well taken care of so it's probably a buy. But the drive home with the kid is priceless. Do that for sure!!

  • PDK
  • Sport Exhaust
  • Sport Chrono Package (With the PDK transforms the car...drive in Sport mode, the engine runs cooler..in Sport +, amazing. I have had my 17 GTS for nearly 2 years and I continued to be amazed.)
  • 20" Carrera S Wheels
  • Wheels Painted in Black (High-Gloss)
  • Adaptive Sport Seats Plus (18-way) with memory package
The ride with the kid..priceless, a forever memory. And get those radiator protection screens...also on the trip home, bring a can of that tire repair goop along, and possibly a puncture repair kit. The 2017 Carrera is an exceptional car....and if you feel shorted with the mere 370 HP, with the addition of the Turbos from the GTS and an accompanying tune, your can have 450 HP at your disposal, just sayin...last thing, unless it's a CPO car from a Porsche dealer, consider an aftermarket warranty. You'll see recommended warranty dealers with a quick search on the 991 site.

PS: I'd change your heading from "1 Step Away" to "One Step Away"...when I originally saw your post I thought it was about stepping away from a 2017 991.2 Carrera, now who could love that?

Most tuned Carrera turbos push upper 400’s, usually similar to stock GTS power but more torque and not as much topend. With GTS turbos and tune you should see up around 570hp on 93 octane.
