Engine cover strut failure....
Recently my engine cover struts needed some Cialis or Viagra. Since I was still under CPO I took it to the local dealer and had them replaced for free. Here is the part number if anyone is wondering:
991-512-551-21
The old part number was:
991-512-551-20
I am wondering if its a new supplier or the old part was found to be highly defective and this is a new that is a bit more heat tolerant?
The dealer was ready to charge me $315 USD to do the work but realized very quickly this was warranty work. Part alone is 93 bucks and you need two. I think someone sourced an identical part on amazon for like $30 bucks for the pair. (I cannot find the thread) I am sure the install is pretty straight forward.
Porsche tax is high on this fix from a percentage point of view....

Extraordinarily common problem that has plagued the 911s forever.
If I still had mine I would spec out a customer heavy duty strut from a supplier just to never have to futz with it again.

I've never had to replace struts on any car before -- the hatch struts on my 30-year old RX7 work just fine. My 991.1's lasted less than 6 years from the car's build date, and the car had less than 11,000 miles at the time. I replaced them in September, 2021 with a pair by Stabilus that I got from Pelican for $25 each, plus shipping and tax. That saved me over $110 versus the local dealer's parts dept. price.

its amazing my attic ladder has struts to retract the ladder and keep closed. I use 7-8 times a week. Installed in 2012. Still works perfect. Attic ladder manufacturer has better qualifications to specify struts than Porshe. Don't think Porshe doesn't design failure into their cars to keep their pockets lined. Much like their $650 oil changes, $400 alignments........

Apparently the engine heat degrades the seal material in these, which is why they fail.
I also got the quote for the $300 replacement, from my indie, at my last oil change and checkup. No. I found an equivalent part on eBay for $20 and with the help of a YouTube video had it on in ten minutes.

From friends I know who have owned 911’s for many years the front struts under the frunk where there is no engine heat wear out also. I just replaced the front ones on my 2015 Targa last week.
