Crazy for considering selling my GTS for Taycan??
#16
We own a Taycan 4S and a 991.1 C2S. I must admit the Taycan is far better than I would have surmised. The handling up to 7/10 is outstanding. The acceleration is far stronger than the 991. Plus it’s quieter and more comfortable. I think it’s a great daily driver and it has convinced me the hate for electric cars is unfounded.
That said driving the 911 is a special event. The sound/feel/handling are far more involving, to say nothing of the manual transmission. If you don’t need these sensations then the Taycan is far superior. If you revel in the snick of a shifter, the roar of the exhaust, or the tail wanting to slide out then the Taycan won’t scratch your itch. I would love a Taycan for a daily though!

What he said and I don’t think the Tycan is that great anyway it has much less range than it’s competitors and I don’t think it is even that good looking.

Keep the GTS.
When I took delivery of my new-to-me 991.1 GTS at the Porsche dealer, I asked the sales advisor about the Taycan. He tells me he sells a lot of them, mostly younger customers - new to the brand. But after these people buy the Taycan, they start looking at the 911s roaming the streets and guess what they say… « oh, sh*t, we should have bought that one »

Drove the Taycan Turbo on the Barber track along with a 911S, 911 Turbo, and Cayman S. The Taycan is neat, but you can feel EVERY single extra pound of those heavy batteries in the turns. I found it underwhelming other than the acceleration, which is overkill on the streets. It's going to suck when EVs are everywhere and everyone can go 0-60 in 3 seconds. People can't drive now, and this will just make it worse.
For me, it's all about the turns, and the Taycan seems to struggle to feel anything other than laboring in the turns. Add the range issues since the Taycan seems to be at the lower end of the range for EVs and it's a big thumbs down unless you don't plan to stray away from interstates and don't mind investing in a home charger.
My 2014 911-50 is essentially a 991.1 GTS and it is special. Nearing 100K miles in it and I can't imagine giving up a 991.1 GTS for the thrill and long term enjoyment.

Taycan is good for what it is intended for, just like any other six figure luxury sports sedan, they aren’t intended to be track superstars. You cruise around town, relax in traffic, bomb around the interstate, and blast away from stoplights. Taycan is great for that, but obviously EV tech isn’t a great solution for a large part of the population, at least not yet. I wouldn’t buy a Taycan to be my only fun car. It’s a nice drive, especially in LA traffic, but lacks the fizz. I would buy it to be my second car, to drive to work, get an HOV lane sticker. If I can only have one car, I’m keeping my 911. Literally any 911 I would take as my only car over literally any Taycan. However, having both is the best of both worlds, and that is my recommendation. You’ll regret selling the 911. Guaranteed.

So I decided to leave my office a little early to do a test drive and look at the car more without the family distraction.
I drove the Taycan for the first time after the sales guy (a good friend) drove it first…He drove that thing so freaking fast that I still think I am dizzy - I never in my life remember going that fast around corners and got woozy on straight line acceleration.
The tech is cool and for some reason to me it looks simply amazing! Especially in the Ice Grey with black bits and carbon exterior mirrors.
It actually made noise that simulated acceleration which was weird but welcomed so it’s not whisper quiet.
Ride was smooth and the insulated glass kept heat and road noise out. Definitely a very different experience to what I have now.
This one I am interested in has a bunch of options to the tune of $170k. It’s definitely on the high side.
I read all the comments and first wanted to say Thank you for the feedback.
I am torn here as most everyone noted I have a daily already but this was to replace my weekend and fun car to enjoy.
I haven’t made a decision 100% as of yet and wanted to first figure out what my GTS is worth right now - I know what it’s worth to me. Trouble if I go this route it will be hard to get what I feel is a fair deal.
I do also agree that I may regret letting this one go after sometime looking again for the visceral sound and feel of a motor.
I am taking the next couple days to keep researching and will let everyone know what the end decision will be.

He warned me but I still want ready. I am telling you it was insane how stupid fast around the corners it was.
It was a GTS with the performance + battery…He said it’s essentially a detuned TurboS and I really can’t imagine what a TurboS feels like.

Keep it.
Trading in a naturally aspirated GTS (the last and most powerful naturally aspirated Carrera ever, mind you) for a first generation electric vehicle would be, to me, like swapping a Patek Philippe for an iWatch.
Good luck replacing the GTS you spent so much time and effort perfecting in the likely event you end up missing it. The Taycan you swap it out for will be obsolete in a matter of years. The 991.1 GTS will always be held in high regard. Sure, a first generation iWatch is cool but it is already outdated and will look even more outdated with each passing generation. Meanwhile, the Patek (like the GTS) will always be a classic, will age gracefully, and will continue to appreciate in value.

In my opinion, see if you can get a test drive of a Rivian R1T or R1S to replace your truck or SUV. They both do 0-60 in the 3.0-3.2 second range, just the same as the GTS you test drove and you'd save $70k compared to the Taycan GTS. And keep the 911.
