991.2 S versus 991.1 Turbo decision
#16
I thought I would miss the 6MT from my 997.1 Turbo when I bought my 991.1 Turbo S. For the most part, I don’t miss it. The PDK gearbox is much better suited for the turbo than the manual gearbox. A turbo at full throttle hits redline in less than 1 second in 1st gear. You simply can’t shift fast enough with a manual to extract all the performance that it offers!
I’ve loved every 911 that I’ve owned, but the 991.1 TTS has been the best by far.

Depends on what you go, a modern TT is just too fast for backroad fun, once the turbos are spooled it’s crazy fast. Now on the open road and highway where you can let it breath, you’re gonna blow by just about anyone and can do that for hours on end.

The numbers don't tell the real tale of the tape. The TTS 991.1 has 560 hp awd so power to all 4 wheels at launch, the Carerra S will not keep up. also just a bit of a tune to the TTS and you are over 600. rear wheel steering, ceramic brakes, plus, plus. Mine is a 2014 custom tuned by Sam at ByDesign, Europipe exhaust and DSC V3. Engine solid as a rock.

Hard call. You can certainly make the 991.2S what you want by going with an APR K04.3 Turbo upgrade + stage 3 tune - 550hp/556tq. But then you’ll really need to upgrade the brakes, especially if you’re doing any track days - you’ll destroy the standard S brakes inside of 20 minutes with the added heat dissipation from the extra speed. Ask me how I know . And you can change the suspension setup. To so so, though, you’ll be adding another roughly $20k to the price of the car. The advantage is that it’s RWD only (more “fun”), lighter than the Turbo/Turbo S and comes with a 7MT. And like you say, it comes with newer technology and *can* be made to work with Android Auto as well as CarPlay. And probably will have less mileage.
OTOH, the 911 Turbo is an iconic car. The Carrera S - as much as I like my modified one - is not. Don’t get me wrong - it’s a helluva car, but it’s not iconic. And some people prefer a PDK, so there’s that.

I'd say go with the Turbo, as others have said it's iconic and really is something special. You can safely tune up in the 625 hp range with minimal modifications (just an exhaust). Carplay can be added to the stock head unit, the kit is around $500 and it has good reviews (I have not added it yet). The 9A1 Turbo engine is a solid and reliable piece of machinery and is close to flawless, 60k miles would be no concern whatsoever for me. As to the PDK, the 991.2 has the 8-speed version over the 7-speed in the 991.1, but is it really better? Who needs eight gears? The 991.1 Turbo PDK is upgraded from that used in the Carrera with a beefed up clutch and strengthened internals. It's highly reliable and if it does break there's now numerous repair options, which there aren't yet for the newer PDK.
As to your daughter wanting the Turbo, she's got good taste. However, to keep my insurance costs reasonable my carrier made me sign a waiver saying no driver under 25 is covered. Since I have a 19 year old son I was 100% fine with that. In fact I may have suggested it if they didn't.

Good info as we've got a PDK repair clearinghouse over in the 997 forum that applies to all the 7-speed versions (9x7, 9x1). As these newer cars come off warranty and run up some miles it's good to know most of the info should apply through the 2020 MY cars.

i've had both and currently have the 991.2 S with manual gearbox.
the S is the best street 911 i've had and crazy quick. I do not ever feel the S is lacking power on the street, and i'm bone stock.
on the other hand, the turbo is LOL quick and i got a speeding ticket while test driving it from the dealer.
the turbo has power you will seldom if ever use. if you don't mind paying for loads of almost unusable power, then the turbo is lovely.
if you want a really competent, comfortable, relatively quiet sportscar, the Carrera S is nearly impossible to beat for the money.
also, the manual in the Carrera S is really nice to use. very pleasurable drive.

Excellent, thanks for all the input. This is one of those decisions where the brain says "991.2 S" and the heart says "turbo".
I'll try to spend some time with both, but have a feeling the hips will push me to the Turbo (for more than the extra hp will)
Saw this at the local dealer yesterday
