Default Upgrading PSE 991.1 Carrera S

I am owner of a 991.1 Carrera S manual what has a PSE exhaust, coming from a Gallardo I am not overwhelmed by the exhaust not, it sounds nice in "open" & sport mode however missing the race note.

I am the only one who thinks so ?

It will never sound like a Gallardo I am aware of that, but a more pitching sound note would be more welcome or also to say some more emotion :-)

Of course there are options enough but with a big bill to pay for that extra, so I was planning to exchange the headers/cats to larger diameter tubes and 200 cell HJS cats also the side mufflers to exchange for sport mufflers. The brand of these components are from china and not from Soul, Akra or whatever.

Have people done the same, exchange the components what I mention and what was the end result of that as far as exhaust note ?

I have the 991.1 with PSE. All I had done was replacing the main rear muffler with the AWE Switchpath exhaust. Headers/Cats/SideExhaust are stock. PSE closed its quiet like stock with no drone, but PSE open it bypasses the 2 side cats (and obviously the rear one is gone) so it's essentially straighpiped from the cats back. Here is mine with the valves open:

Just remember, your PSE only bypasses the stock side exhaust. So if you're replacing the side exhausts and leaving the big rear oem one, you're doing it a bit backwards. When you'd open the PSE and it would just bypass the new aftermarket side exhaust and still go through the large oem rear muffler.

(Stock) PSE Closed: Headers/Cats -> Center Muffler -> Side Mufflers -> Tailpipes
(Stock) PSE Open: Headers/Cats -> Center Muffler -> Tailpipes

I would do Headers/Cats and the Rear/Center muffler, and leave the stock side ones. This way you can have the car quieter when you want with the PSE closed, but if you open the PSE it'll flow straight through your new headers/cats, bypass the side exhaust, and only go through the new rear/center exhaust before it comes out of the pipes. That will give you the sound you're looking for plus functionality, imo.

I'm very happy with just doing the rear muffler. I did not want to deal with possible broken bolts and CEL's by going Headers/Cats first, however most didn't have that issue.

@RP4S911 that is good info about the side mufflers, really didn’t know that there for also my post, thanks!

To replace the center muffler you have got the chance of droning.

Researched this forum and the AWE system has some droning and some people really disliked it.

The AWE was guaranteed to have no droning with PSE closed, and it doesn't at all. It does have some drone at lower highway speeds with everything open, but the small amount of times I noticed i just put it in a different gear or sped up a little. Regarless of brand, the setups should be similar.

Excuse the crudeness, I usually use photoshop but this was on my phone:

Stock PSE flow-

Aftermarket PSE Flow-

yah exhausts like everything else increased in price quite a bit. I was able to get my AWE switchpath for around $900 used. So maybe watch the used market, even at $1500 it's still a good value if you are patient.

Thanks for the replies, getting into the 200 cell cat more interested.

What are the chances to get a CEL with 991.1 ?

Seller says it never happened but I have read some posts here they can happen….

So I am a bit in a struggle now, anyone can share his light on this ?

I have fabspeed headers 200 cel cats. And I get cat ineffiency codes. I added spacers to rear O2's and it's all happy now.

I did the Top Speed Pro-1 valved exhaust. Valves open is straight pipe. Valves closed is quiet like stock, maybe quieter,
Quality was great and install was pretty straight forward and easy.

I decided to replace the PSE system for the Kline catback exhaust system, and the sound of the Kline compared to PSE is very noticeable and also much nicer.

When valves are closed all is quiet normal no drone or other negative side effects, valves open than the fun starts. I run it with the standard cat/headers and would not go for 200 cell cat/headers because I am afraid than all hell comes loose and it will be too much.

Why Kline and not iPE, Kline is European and a bit price friendly just a bit ;-)
