Default An inquisitive mind would like to know..

I am sorry in advance for being naive or very slow, which both are probably true, but can someone be kind enough to please explain why not all of the 2017’s and 2018’s 991.2 have water pump issues. They obviously all had the exact same water pump built and installed exactly the same. Some owners have had issues and some have been driven 20,000 to 40,000 miles with no issues at all. Is it the way the owner drives, or warms/up or down the car? Or is the 🍀 luck of the draw. Please be kind enough not to ridicule this question, but I might not be as smart or have as much common sense as many of the forum members do. Thank you in advance for you patience!

May just be a when, not if, question. PCNA extended the warranty period to 10 years or 120k miles for this problem on 17/18 Carreras and Targas. We’ll see more activity on replacements happening in the next few years since some folks don’t drive their 991s as often.

No two pieces of hardware are the same. Castings have varying inclusions and flashing, machining is to varying degrees of precision, and accuracy depending on how the casting was affixed during the process. If you compound errors sometimes you get a big deviation in function. Add procurement processes, contractor management, and quality control and acceptance criteria, and it gets even tougher. And that’s assuming it was designed well from the get go, which it may not have been. 2019s seem to be immune to this issue, so the problem was either fixed in design, manufacturing or both.

I bought a 17 new, no issues for me so far... I don't have a lot of miles so maybe it's in my future.

I've posted this before. There was a manufacturing error.

sounds like this should have been a total recall (unintentional pun reference to Arnold). Interesting that this slipped through. I wonder how that happened as parts and processes would be reviewed prior to production. Since Porsche says coolant is lifetime, I wonder if they reuse or replace when switching out water pump?

I have a 2018, that was a March 2018 build, I spec'd and ordered new. No water pump failure after almost 5 years,38K miles, 15 AX days and 2 DE days (although had thermostat replaced when vehicle was 14 months old).

I did query Rennlisters in another thread, and didn't hear any with a March 2018, or later build, that have had the water pump failure.

So I was under the impression the faulty pump was replaced in manufacturing since March 2018.

Not sure if it matters, but....I do religiously let vehicle finish the cold-start rough idle and drop down to ~1K RPM before puting the PDK in gear, and also always minimize cold starts (rarely ever take vehicle for a drive where engine oil does not get to normal operating temp above 170F), and never push engine above 3.5K RPM before normal operating temp is reached.

2019 Carrera T, produced 2018-11-19, and experienced the water pump issue.
