1) Retired after 34 years in various leadership roles for a financial services company
2) As I reflected on what I learned over the years, I compiled a list a few years before I retired and I when asked I would share them.
  • Learn what you can to do the best job you can.
  • Do small things well in order to earn the opportunity to do bigger things in the future.
  • Don't be satisfied with average. Strive to have excellence associated with your name.
  • Work exceptionally well with others. Be a team player that others name as the key to the team's success.
  • Create winners without creating losers.
  • Welcome change.

- People over profits. Take care of people and profits will happen.

This! Herb Kelleher, founding partner of Southwest Airlines said, take care of employees first, they in turn will take care of the customer and wall street will be happy as a result. Corporate America often has it backwards. Cannot stand bean counters. They have no clue as to the human cost/benefit analysis.

I learned that I value my free time, or at least, the ability to decide what I do with my time, rather than having a rigid schedule.

In a nutshell, I took the opportunity to teach myself to be highly productive. I've always been a productive person, but the difference now is that I try to focus on the really important stuff that no one else can do. I've gotten way better at delegating and trusting my employees to do their part. It was hard to give up control, but my businesses are all the better for it. It's nice to be a mostly stay-at-home dad at 38 years old.

I also took the opportunity in 2020 to teach myself the miles & points game (I'm still learning a ton, and will keep learning - no different than the car hobby). In 2022 I took what I learned and travelled to 9 different countries all on points and nearly all in J or F. I have some aspirational trips lined up for this year and next year as well, but I put a pretty big dent in the points I accumulated from 2020-2021, so I'll have to slow down my travel a little bit.
Completely love the miles/points game.

Did the Maldives in January 2023, and Bora Bora in 2022. All on points Nothing like turning points into a kickass vacation, get upgraded along the way, and flying in J/F. 100% agree with making the system work for you.

Just booked Singapore/Seoul for this summer on points as well

What do I do? I was an enlisted MM2, USN turned U.S. Naval Academy graduate, turned Naval Aviator, turned lawyer. I've been in private practice now for around 20 years after 16 years on active duty and have had my own law firm for 9 years.

What have I learned? If there isn't something in your life that you are willing to sacrifice your life for, your life has little meaning and virtually no value. Sacrifice for the things you want and learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable and you will surpass others who cannot stop trying to get comfortable. There are many other things I have learned from many people I have been privileged to work for, with, and lead but it would take a book. I am forever grateful for the opportunities I have been afforded.
