+1
I kind of had the same impression as the OP. In particular, the level of noise and ride quality. The problem was short, stupid test drives that do not allow the car's attributes to shine through. A 911 is an acquired taste. Drivers coming from a luxury car, expecting the same level of isolation will not like them. It is on the loud side, you hear gravel in the wheel wells, a good stereo is a waste and it is built to save weight. I think 991.2 doors have a nice thunk to them and materials and build quality are excellent. Best driving car I have ever owned...

It's also something you made up.

I can't say I have noticed any smells from my 911, nor have I noticed it 'picks up' anything from the roadway which my other vehicle did not.

Having owned 3 991.1 S/GTS cars in last 5 yrs, I cant say I agree with any of the statements about rattles. Sure, all 3 of my 991s were under 35K miles and originated from west coast, none had any rattles or squeaks.
I drive my current GTS in rural Shenandoah valley, over bumpy roads, gravel and occasional cow dung even, and it as sound and quiet as a new car (35K miles now)

May be look at the car history, 4-6 owners and beat up on Urban crappy streets? Any car can be beat up and abused in 6-9 yrs to feel "tinny"

My 2015 is pretty rattle free and I drive the bad roads of NY.

Most times I read such posts with a giant question mark above my head. Cannot understand how anyone would expect a sports car to be quiet or rattle free. If that is what your criteria is, get a luxury car. Cannot recall anytime I heard that a corvette, mclaren, or lambo was quiet and rattle free.

my 1995 993 with 160k+ miles is definitely still like a bank vault.

my 2012 991 with 30k+ miles definitely has some noises. i had the fuel tank squeek (fixed at dealer), i had a rattle from the center console latch that was fixed with a bit of felt and if i'm being picky there is some noise from the top of the seatbelt mechanism.

some people have chased them all down. i wouldn't let that be the deciding factor.

What was your intended implication here, then?

'14 C4S /X51 (7MT) is 100% rattle free. I wonder if the dash and interior construction varies between "all leather" cars (mine is all leather down to the vents) as opposed to whatever the interior components are otherwise? As far as driving experience, make no mistake, at these power levels (400-430HP depending if you get a GTS engine) you're getting a car that's ~a Mustang GT when you settle out HP/weight between the two. That's to say, yes, it's a great performance car and a lot of fun, but regular/S/GTS models aren't anything special relative to what many would consider to be "common" performance cars you can buy at a fraction of the cost. If you're seeking out something that returns a "holy $%&*, this is a performance car" response when you press the pedal, you need to be looking at Turbo's and Turbo S's.

sounds like you hoped or expected an apple would taste like an orange?. if you're looking for a 911 model or generation that feel like or close to an e39, i'd stop looking and wasting your time now. you are not going to succeed. don't think the answer is driving different 911's. different expectations would work much better imho

Two things - in the past year of owning a relatively low-mileage 991.1 manual, I've found it to be an EXCEPTIONAL touring car. Of the 11,000 miles in the last year, over 5,000 were long trips (1000+ miles, each). I found the car to be exceptionally comfortable, gets 30 MPG in 7th gear at 80 mph and was absolutely rock solid. Secondly, the smell issue - just look in the rear wheel wells. The rear tires are going to throw road debris directly onto the muffler components just behind it. Make sense there would be some smell. Never found it to be offensive.

I've owned 40+ cars in half that many years, E39 M5 included. Directly before my 991.1 was a Macan S, before that an E63 wagon. Each car is different. Given what's being produced today, with an increased reliance on technology that will quickly be out-moded, This 991.1 is the first car I can 100% tell you I will not be selling in the few decades. It's not perfect, but it's better than most all.

regarding 991 smell: mine has 100.000 km on the odo and some passengers stated to me that the interior has "new car smell"
I don't have the additional leather package.

I find the various smells extraordinarie and LOVE them!
  • just sitting inside the cold car: special 911 smell
  • after a spirited drive when parked, putting your nose close to the motor vents is awesome! :-)
The 911 experience is definitely for all the senses!

Like others said before: I wish I could have these in a fragrance bottle!

With regards to the smell: go drive a 993, then a 996, 997 and 991 hard, especially in the summer. You'll realized what Asellus is talking about...

I have been looking seriously for the past 6 months, and have missed a few via BAT, PCM, that I regret. Manual transmission, coupe, (not a 2012), sunroof delete have been the parameters I have been focused on.

I currently drive a 2002 E39 530i that I absolutely love - it is unbelievably well built and feels like a bank vault when I close the door, or go over a bump...etcetera. It is solid and has this excellent mechanical feel to it. I had never driven a 991, but have driven Macan, Panamera, and Cayenne and found the build quality top notch, and a smilier ride experience and expected the same out of a 911.

Yesterday I test drove a 2014 991. C2S (7MT) at a local dealer...I had no interest in buying this car, but as I was getting close to getting one, thought that it would be prudent to make sure I liked that car. This car was a little higher in millage ~50K, but overall seemed to be in pretty decent shape. If I am being honest, I did not like it at all. Sure, the power was great...loved the handling and transmission action, but felt the interior was full of rattles and the car just felt 'tinny' driving around town, felt similar to my airport corolla. I know a sports car is not going to be like a luxury car, and I will use this car as a grand tourer vs a track/autocross car, but still felt disappointed.

This is a long way of asking, but is this common in 991.1, and if so - would a 997.2 be better (also have not driven a 997.2, but if so will try to find one to drive/ride in)? Or do I need to have a come to Jesus moment and give up on the MT, and just go get an LC500?

Thanks for the advice!

My comment on my airport corolla was just in jest - the door card felt thin on the 911, and reminded me of the corolla when I closed the door. It goes without saying that the 911 was magnitudes better and was a blast - I just have gotten used to this solid feeling E39, and was surprised that specific 991 didn't feel the same way.

I am really excited to be part of this community and have learned a ton as a lurker for the better part of a year.
Sounds to me that the OP formulated an opinion on the quality (or lack of) based on closing the door of the 911 that he drove (991.1). In my experience with any 911, Boxster, or Cayman, closing the door on them does not give the same impression of quality that one might expect from a German engineered / built car. (I've not yet driven a 991.2 or a 992, so perhaps they are different in this regard.)

Closing the door is one of the first things that one would do of course after seating themselves in the car - so that's when the impression is created. Added to that perhaps could be small stones or gravel kicking up (others may have said this) - when those stones have freed themselves from the tires and then ricocheted onto the metal of the inner fender (could be "tinny" sounding.) Then - there you have it, an impression of a a poor, or inferior quality vehicle is created within the OP's mind... Easy to picture this happening and to understand.

To the OP I would just convey - don't let those initial sensory inputs cause you immediately solidify an opinion or to shut down on determining or understanding what a 911 is all about.

Thanks for all the insights! Great discussion so far.

Yesterday I drove an LC500, 997.1 4S (6MT), and a 991.2 (PDK). Absolutely loved the LC, but do not think I am going to go that direction as I missed shifting gears too much. The 997.1 was really sweet - felt very similar to my E39. I think that heavy feel I was longing for comes from the hydraulic steering rack. The 991.2 was nearly rattle free, and I enjoyed it a lot more than the one that started this conversation.
