As others have stated, it would be valuable for you to seek out and drive other 991's so that you can get more exposure to the model. Perhaps the one you drove was just a poor example.
The comment about a 997 not being a viable alternative with regard to being rattle-free and solid feeling - total nonsense. My 997.2 was a fabulous car. Zero rattles and solid as a tank. Loved that car.
2009 C2S Cab. Meteor Gray / Dark Gray Natural Leather. What a great car this was.
Do you honestly believe any generation of 911 (except perhaps the 992, which enthusiasts critique as being too big and heavy) is going to be comparable to a 530i? I think you’re focusing on the “rattles” part of the OP’s comment and missing the forest for the trees, which was that the OP was expecting more of a “solid” or “planted” or “heavy” car. A 997 is not going to feel like a “bank vault.” I could be wrong though…
Thank you for all the feedback! I am going to drive a few different versions/years this week (and be agnostic to transmission as I still want a MT when/if I buy), and see how a different example feels.
My comment on my airport corolla was just in jest - the door card felt thin on the 911, and reminded me of the corolla when I closed the door. It goes without saying that the 911 was magnitudes better and was a blast - I just have gotten used to this solid feeling E39, and was surprised that specific 991 didn't feel the same way.
I am really excited to be part of this community and have learned a ton as a lurker for the better part of a year.

I own a 2013 C2S with 15k miles. Not a single rattle and solid as a rock. Tubi exhaust makes it sound downright mean and a new set of Michelin PS4s smooths the ride. Unbeatable performance per $, imo
The tires, turbos, and exhaust are all situated in such a way that produces interesting smells after driving. Kicking up all the road grime into hot components like that makes for some interesting oily smells when you park!
Yes... I love the "you just drove the hell out of me" smell that's in my garage when I park. It can really heat up your garage as well while it cools.

I'm not talking about "the car tried hard" smell. You can get a toyota corolla to smell like that if you floor it a little bit. I'm talking about the smells that are simply a byproduct of a 911's design.
Like when you drive to the store and back and the roads are a little wet. Smells like road oil. Or if you drive through construction and pick up tar. Smells like fresh pavement. Or if that pothole up the street is coming back and throwing little bits of asphalt that you have to drive over to get home. Smells like burning dirt.
I have a 13 C2S and it's solid as a rock. The car has the full leather and I think it makes a difference in the feel of the interior. I'm sure it has squeaks and rattles but I have not noticed because the car is loud (PSE with Soul long tubes with cats). If you are deciding between a 991 or a LC500, that's comparing apples and oranges.
as mentioned, could have just been a poor example. I skipped on one last go round that had that same feel too it... I've owned a bunch of bmw's, and the older e39/e46 generation was the pinnacle for them and for sure had that feel. I'd switched over to audi a couple years back after being disappointed in the newer generation bmw's, and while they are pretty good too I will say the engineering of mounting in the newer porsche's is on a different level. While there is lots of noise (yay!) in a sports car, and weight cutting in areas like sound deadening, the build quality feel is pretty great. I'm in a 991.2, which maybe is a little different, but I go back to trying more examples too...
Your E39 weighs at least a couple hundred pouinds more than the 991 you drove. If you add a couple hundred pounds of sound-dampening material to the 991, it will be as quiet as the BMW.. This is the compromise Porsche decided upon, for better or worse.
Conversely, you can take a couple hundred pounds out of the 530i, but that won't turn it into a 911.
Is asellus smell for real, what is he talking about?
What smell and why even tell a new excited buyer, something that makes no sense. The 911 is a fantastic car. Never smelled anything in all my Porsches that I have owned. Love to hear from previous owners that have a “smell”.

It's often referred to as "Porsche Perfume". Common trait of 911's. Many references to it in the 997 forum.

Not negative, just realistic.
I find that too many people gush about the 991, ignoring all the faults, insisting it's the perfect car for every occasion. Simply put, it's not. No use lying to prospective buyers -- I'd rather save someone the hassle of buying one, coming on here and posting "why isn't it like my old lexus?", and selling it at a loss three months later.

I agree, full leather makes the interior feel nicer. My 991.1 has full leather and no moonroof, which I think both help to eliminate squeaks and rattles.
I recently drove a loaner 991.2 C4S, (non-full leather and with moonroof), and it definitely had more rattles.
