991.1 European Tail Light Swap
#17
This is not plug and play and will require a little Dremel work. Here are the tail light connectors (thanks First991 for the photo):
And the wiring harness plug:
You can see two differences:
1. the notches are on opposite corners
2. the alignment tab is in a slightly different location
Need to Dremel in the notch on the other corner and Dremel off the alignment tab. I will modify the lights and not the wiring harness plug. That will make these European tail lights plug and play with any US or European car. A little more work than anticipated but from what I have read, it should not be difficult and it will work without any other changes.
See posts 14 (991.1) and 22 (991.2) in this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/1149...euro-spec.html

I found a source for the connectors. (https://www.automotive-connectors.co...ties_multi=363) Rather than modify the lights I'm going to buy the European connectors (FEP 42144200) and make adapters. They are only €8.46 each pre-wired, €25.51 shipped for the pair.

I had the rear (and front) lights exchanged for the EU versions on my US 991.1 that I shipped to Germany, at a dealership in Munich. They exchanged the rear connectors as well. Only the amber stripe blinks, the break lights stay solid, and the side markers should blink as well according to the German spec.

Also did the euro lights. I just modded the factory connectors instead of the tail lights. Also thought about just buying the proper connectors mentioned above but didnt want to wait, has been months since then no issues.

An update (finally):
These are the parts I purchased from DeyTrade in Germany (www.automotive-connectors.com):
I also bought solder seals and a heat gun from Amazon:
Before modifying the male connector:
And after:
Just need to knock off the corner which was easy with a snap blade.
Ready for assembly:
The male pigtail has 8 wires. Only 6 are used in our cars. I snipped off wire numbers 7 & 8 as close to the connector as I could and cut the remaining wires to 2" in length.
The female pigtail has 7 wires so I snipped off wire number 7 and cut the others to length.
The completed adapter:
I verified everything fits but the batteries in both my key fobs are dead. My spare one already was but the one I use everyday died in the last week. I need to run to Walgreens and pick up a couple of 2032 button batteries.
More to come.

Got new batteries for my key fob. I tested the light before installing it. Everything works including the fog light.
Yay! I'll get both installed tomorrow and take some photos with my new RS tinted Euro tail lights.

Great stuff. Thanks for posting your DIY. The adaptor is awesome.
I have been hedging on this for a while, but your adaptor solution seems to solve a lot of my reservations. Wonder if there is a one-piece adaptor that marries the two pieces.
Post more pics when you get a chance.
