Default Simple Hood/Trunk/Bonnet Strut/Support Replacement

Howdy all, while this may be elementary for many of us, we always welcome newcomers wanting to pick up the wrenches and start with basic repairs of their cars. here's about as simple of a repair as possible for newbies.

I just replaced both my original engine lid struts in my 2015. The spec'd 130N works out to ~29.2 pounds force. The ones I removed measured in at 13 and less than 10.

that's kind of a cool data point. makes perfect sense too. safety factor of over 2 with a new one as i could hold the lid up with just one shock, which is over double what your worn ones measured. cool.

Newcomers and veterans alike. I've built whole-*** race cars but I still looked up how to detach these struts for peace of mind.

I actually need to replace mine. On my Rover a windshield wiper arm nut spec is 11 pounds. Twenty-nine seems like a lot for those little strut bolts. But assume that’s correct just surprised.

The poundage here is the push force of the strut. There's no nut/bolt setup here, they clip onto ball mounts (since they pivot)

The new one actually measured between 28 and 30 pound-force. Its hard to get a steady measurement when you are pressing down on them.

Same thing for the engine lid struts on my 993. Spec is 370N or ~83.2 pound-force and they measured about that (86 pound-force).

Ah, I see this makes sense. Sorry for the silly question.

Good vid and how to. I think the most important part is to put a little grease on the ball so the socket can snap in. I don't recall having to pull the tab back on the new strut, just pushed it in and let the grease does its job.

much appreciated, and i've heard that too, that you don't have to pry the springs on the new one before snapping them in place, but that's how i've always done it as it seemed like good practice, but it may not be necessary as you noted. thanks!

grease is an interesting idea. makes sense just in general given it pivots on the ball.

can't remember if I pulled back the new spring clips before installation. I think I did. wasn't a big deal though.

not sure i would've remembered the grease, but saw it on the old one and was a palm/face moment.
