Default Upgrade to power steering plus?

My 2017 base cab didn’t have PS+ when ordered. I read that it could be added later, so I spoke to my dealer.

They confirmed that it was upgradable, but told me something I hadn’t expected: they said it required an upgraded part as well as software. The total was like $600-ish.

This surprised me for two reasons:
- I had read it was just software?
- I’ve never heard of a car company offering to install upgraded hardware at a dealership???

So, two questions for you smart people:
1) Have any of you done the PS+ Upgrade with just software?

2) Would they upgrade anything else on the car? For example, if I asked to add Adaptive Cruise Control… would they do it??

Never heard that it required hardware either, but could be a .2 thing.
Fwiw I actually had my dealer remove it.. really wasn't a fan of the variable steering at low speeds.

Had Power Steering Plus added to my 991.2 C4S and it was just an activation code. Purchased the feature from Suncoast and my local dealer activated it.

I would be shocked if it wasn't software only. Suncoast Porsche lists it as software only for both the 991.1 and the 991.2.

Power Steering Plus Software : Suncoast Porsche Parts & Accessories (suncoastparts.com)

I've had it on all three of my 991s (991.1 and 991.2). I like it - easy to turn when navigating a parking lot. It's only low effort at low speeds (less than 25 mph, I believe) so you don't notice it at all on the track or autocross.

As for OEM hardware that can be added later - PSE is one that quite a few folks have done. I'm not sure about adding ACC - that's a lot of hardware and software to add, including the sensors up front, a new stalk, and upgrading the PCM. I've never heard of someone doing that but it would be interesting if possible.

Upgraded hardware isn’t anything new. 997.2 owners are able to add Sport Chronos (features, minus the clock) at the dealership.

You may want to hear from others about what changes they have noted from adding power steering + to their car. I read some a few years ago that added it, and didn't like the way it handled, and so had it removed.

Most people code it out if anything. Been on my list for 5 years now to get rid of this "feature".

If it is only active to 25 MPH, why would a person want to get rid of it? Had it added to my former car and it was barely noticeable in the first place.

For me, I appreciate more linear, natural steering.

I've had previous 991's without PS+, and the one I have now was spec'ed with it from the factory. Sounded like a gimmick, but it's not. I see a lot of talk about slow speed. At lot speeds it just maneuvers easier, like it should have been from the factory ...but on the highway it's incredible. The wheel stiffens to a completely different car compared to its slow speed personality. It feels like you just gained an extra 1000lbs of downforce, and really sharpens the quick, higher speed, maneuvers. I'll be looking for it again on my next one.

OP, it's software only for sure. And it has no noticeable negative impact on steering feel; you'll only notice it at very low, parking lot speeds. I owned two 911s at the same time, one with it and one without it. My opinion was always that I liked it on the one that had it, but it wasn't enough of a difference to make me want to pay $300 to have it installed on the other car. However, having owned and driven those cars back to back, I always chuckle at people who make it seem like it turns the steering into a 72 Lincoln.

PS+ only operates at speeds below 19 mph. It has no impact whatsoever on high speed steering or stability.

There is definitely a difference when changing lanes at high speed vs. my last non-PSP 991.1's. However, I'm also one of those guys that can tell you which of the 4 wheels independently has a slight vibration or tire noise

It's actually on the Suncoast PS+ description too:

-------

This article does point out that the higher speed change is no where as noticeable as it is with low speed:

That's not the PSP that was on the 991. It's the current iteration of PSP that's on the Taycan and the 992. On the 991, PSP gradually fades out above 10mph and is totally off at 19mph. Anything you think you're feeling is entirely in your head. PSP is such a minimal feature, it's funny how people overreact about it. As I said, I owned two 991s, one with, one without. It's barely noticeable.
