Default sold my 911 for two cars

Sadly, I had to sell my 2018 C4S manual after almost five years of ownership. Couldn't keep it as my only car and I needed a second family car. So I sold it for what I paid for it back in 2017 thanks to the crazy market. That money got me (almost) a plug-in hybrid Volvo XC60 and a 440i convertible (on order). I have to add an extra 20k but that the 911 sold for a pretty penny. I was going to order a 718 Boxster but no allocations to be had and the 440i was cheaper with that sweet inline six. The 911 was a great car and I was lucky it enjoy it for the cost of maintenance, tires and insurance. Maybe I will re-visit the brand once I get bored with the BMW.

Curious to know if you considered keeping the 911 and using the $20k as a down payment for a humble low mileage family car...

Not really. I have developed orthopedic issues which makes it difficult to drive a manual 911. And it is not such a great highway car for me. We recently bought a winter home in southern FL so will be spending winters there. I could have kept the 911 there but it made sense to get a cruiser like the BMW convertible. Plan to use the 440i there and keep the XC60 in NH. Use our other Volvo, a V90 CC to drive back and forth with our dog. I'm also too old and creaky to be driving beaters. 911 money for two nice cars made sense for us for now.

Should add, I'm curious what Porsche does with the electric Boxster. That is at least a couple of years away and I would be very interested in one if the pricing is not nuts like new 911s.

Sounds like you made the right decision for you. A 911 is a great car, but even Porsche sells other vehicles because sometimes a sports car isn’t the right tool for the job. No need to defend that decision to a bunch of random jabronis on the interwebz.

Putting my car purchases aside, what really surprised me (in a pleasant way) was the selling price of my 911 on a consignment sale. The car sold for MSRP. When I ordered the car back in 2017, I negotiated a 6% discount off MSRP and ended up paying about 123k. Even after paying the consignment fee of 5%, I made back the 123K. Porsche's current problems with manufacturing and the lack of new cars in dealerships has driven up the prices of used 911s to crazy levels. I've never seen anything like this. Of course the dealer only offered 105k for my car and I wasn't going to sell it for that. As an one owner car with a manual and decent options (and having all the service records from the dealer) made it very attractive to the buyer. I also threw in my winter wheels and tires that I bought from the dealer.

Congrats on the sale and recouping your purchase price. Out of curiosity, would you mind sharing how many miles were on the car?

I'm sorry to hear that. The grill on the BMW makes me want to puke. But best of luck to you and I hope you're happy.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.....a 911 sure doesn't work in every situation.

Haha...yeah there is something to be said about owning and driving an ugly car. But hard to beat the 74k price for that sweet inline six and the cruising ability of the 440i. The base 718 Boxster PDK I built on the configurator was 87k MSRP but no takers from local Porsche dealers. I really (very foolishly) wanted to order a BGTS (107k MSRP) but thankfully the local dealers have no allocations and one isn't even taking deposits for a wait list. The price anyway is much too high for me. Porsche manufacturing is a mess right now if one wants to order a new sports car.

$74k for a non-M 4 series. Prices these days just blow my mind…

Well, the 440i does have M badges so that must count for something. Haha. Speaking of prices, have you tried building a base Boxster on the configurator? The one I built with PDK, full leather, 18-way seats, PASM, navigation etc. was 87k. For a base Boxster for which there are few allocations and for which the dealer wants a markup. And forget about the 911. A new C4S MSRP is > 150k decently equipped never mind the additional markup that the dealers want for the paltry allocations that they have. It is a good time to sell a Porsche sports car but not to buy one.

Can't blame you for selling your 991.2 given the inputs you've listed, and thrilled for you to do so well on your way out.

Agree it's a great time to sell a 911, but have to think there are some very desirable used Boxster on the market under the price of that 440i, whether 987.2, 981 (GTS?), or even earlier 718? And while I prefer manuals to PDK on the street, PDK offers a major technical advantage in the 987/981/982 platforms as a result of its extra gear and tighter stack.

I'm a spoiled 61 yr old man. I won't buy a used car anymore and Porsche's sports cars have become exorbitantly expensive for me to buy new. When I ordered a lightly-optioned 2013 Boxster S, it was 66k. It didn't even have a backup camera. My 911 was almost twice that and my most expensive car purchase. I'm comfortable spending 60-70k on a new car but not much more. I would love an electric Boxster but I think it will be 100k so I guess I've been priced out of the brand. Good luck to you guys. The cars are lovely but the prices are steep and maintenance is very expensive as well.

I too question the practically of keeping my 2017 C2 MT. My left knee hurts every now and then, and I have to admit entry and exit do take some planning and can illicit a brief grimace. We are the same age. My DD is a '21 330xi, which happens to pretty fast for commuting and errands. BMW seems to have gotten a bit of it's recipe back.
Parting with your 911 must be painful, and I am afraid that I will never forgive myself if I sell mine. The 991 is not readily replaceable and the price of re-entry will be silly if the itch returns. We're in the same spot...only you may have sellers remorse, and I am in danger of the same fate. Cheers.

BTW- I drove the M440 at a BMW event...they are fast, very torquey and love the BMW tech. Just don't look at the grill...ever.
