Default Muffler delete

Thinking of doing a muffler delete. I already have SOUL headers (200 cell cats) and valved exhaust but now thinking of doing away with the mufflers on each side. Any thoughts? When you run in SPORT or SPORT+ is the exhaust even flow through the mufflers or is it more of a "straight piped" approached?

There is a video on YouTube that actually shows the whole stock muffler insides and what happens with the valve open and closed. Open it really is close to a straight pipe. It does bleed off some though even with the valves open.

In short? Don't.

Generally speaking, muffler deletes on these cars are big bad and will only add drone. The .2 PSE setup is basically a drone-diminished straight pipe. The .1 setup you can get away with bypassing the primary (or was it secondary..) muffler, but bypassing the other one will only increase drone. There are a few threads about this.

^^^Disagree... but I have OEM headers and cats... I have heard it is "too" loud to drop the bread box with those. Lots of threads on this discussion. I don't drive the car in such a way that I get drone, but I don't commute/daily drive it... I have gone on record about the increase in ressonance, which to me is different and exactly why I went with the SW exhaust in the first place. Plus you lose some weight way out in back, which is not a bad thing...

Good luck, OP!

I have Vektor headers and catted Soul Trackback exhaust that deletes the muffler and replaces the stock cats. Search my post history and you’ll see some comments and videos.

Quick summary:
  • I don’t daily the car (if you do, don’t do it)
  • I have a Carrera T with LWBs and wish to continue to lighten the car. Lighter is more fun than more powerful, in my experience. Deleting the muffler drops a ton of weight exactly where 911s benefit from it the most (save for unsprung at least).
  • Cold starts shake the earth.
  • After several heat cycles the sound seams to have “broken in,” and I really like it. Other than cold starts it’s never too loud. It does resonate between 2K and 3K when under load. I intend to disconnect the symposer and see if that reduces the resonance.
  • It’s quieter in SPORT and SPORT+ than NORMAL. No clue as to why.
  • I’d do it again.

Is there any power gain by doing this or is it really only sound & weight?

The manufacturers claim so, and it makes sense that power gains would occur, but you’re unlikely to get the most out of the change without a tune for it. My guess is that headers, sport cats, and straight pipes probably net ~20hp.

Would skeptical about HP gains (without a tune and intake changes) from these mods, opinions and data are all over the place.

I'm sticking with my stock PSE as I ordered the 911 that way. Like stated previously, with the valves open it's straight through. No drone at any time and also driven every day.

But do what makes you happy.

I have sharkwerks muffler delete on my .2. Resonance between 2-2.5K when on throttle and that is exactly where the rpm's sit during normal driving on a highway. Sound is very subjective but it is not bad...but there. I also want more ooomph noise and have been considering headers (to improve tone) and/or cats to increase noise. Bottom line, some are ok with it and some are not (see above). Good luck.

Is there any measure of how much louder the .2 is with 200 cell cats?

I have the AWE Switchpath exhaust. It used the PSE button to bypass the side exhausts when you want (the exhaust itself deleted the larger rear one). Nice and quiet with zero drone when in standard modes ...but put it in sport and hit the exhaust button, and it's a track car sound symphony.

Can't speak for the .2 cars but on my .1 sounds amazing at all throttle levels but specifically at full tilt! It screams like crazy which I like. The louder the better ?:P) I don't daily it so it doesn't mater to me. Thanks for the feedback guys!

Ah yes, a .1? The side mufflers need to stay there. Even aftermarket primary muffler bypass setups (like AWE switchpath mentioned above) still connect to the side mufflers and use them as helmholtz resonators to kill drone -- the valving on that simply opens a straight path to the tailpipes, it doesn't close off the side mufflers. Removing them will not increase volume or appreciably change the tone, but it will heavily increase drone.
