You know what else won't pass OBD inspection besides Motec? Anyone running catless downpipes now on a basic Cobb tune, APR tune, or really any U.S. based tune. I just heard that HP Tuners is going down the same route as COBB as well - our options are drying up very quickly in the states.
As of right now, if you purchase a tune from a US based company that enables you to toggle the CEL on/off if you have catless pipes, they'll be rocked with huge fines from the EPA. They are enforcing aftermarket emissions tampering devices in any way possible.
I've never installed a plug and play Motec kit that uses the existing ECU cables, so maybe you can simply revert back to stock by pulling out the Motec and putting the stock ECU back in. A small price to pay to pass inspection, but I also need to swap out my downpipes with my OEM cats every year to pass and I don't complain about that.

This thread has me thinking… how exactly does an emissions test check that the ECU it’s talking to is original?
the ODBII protocol has been long defined so it’s not like they can run a checksum on the ECU software to check it hasn’t been tampered with.
It seems to me a device could be manufactured to hypothetically mimic what an OEM ECU would respond with given any outputs. One would just have to log any commands sent during a smog inspection to figure out what to mimic.
with a device like this in the middle wouldn’t you be able to run any ECU you want?

Three Wheelin'
what's funny about the whole silliness of this is the amount of people who tune their cars is so small that the energy used to enforce these new restrictions probably generates more emissions than the tuned cars.
if states really cared about actual emissions coming out of the tailpipe they could offer a sniff test for anyone who wanted it.

5 Yes, 5 No, 5 Maybe. That’s promising.
Wouldn’t matter if there were 1,000 No’s, we only need a handful of Yes’s to make this happen. Then it will be available to all for the rest of time.

Whilst this seems premature, We really need MoTeC to step up and make it available for 991.2 Carreras.

He’ll have to run it on 98RON until he hets his fuel sorted, but once he is back on E85, I’m a little concerned.
C’mon MoTeC, I can’t let him get the upper hand. 🤣
