Default Steering wheel bubbling

hi everyone

my 991 with the sport steering wheel seems to be bubbling or delaminating or something. Anyone have a fix for this? New part? New steering wheel? New car?

thank you for any insight you might have.

too bad sorry that it happened to your steering wheel. Could it be the result of too much exposition to sun?

its certainly possible. I’d be hesitant to try to sand it or anything. Luckily it’s not peeling.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but the silver surface that's peeling off is an applied film that is designed to mimic chrome. The film's adhesion has failed, neither sanding nor polish will do any good.

I've seen similar, on older car interiors, the "chrome" trim fails like yours.

Probably would require the replacement or taking the piece off, stripping it and giving it a different finish. Either way PITA and likely not cheap. Maybe look for a used piece from resellers.

Good luck.

I believe the film that's delaminating is a clear coat. I think this can be easily repaired. I have the same Sport Design steering wheel from my GTS. I removed/replaced with a .2 GT Sport wheel. When I have time I'll disassemble the Sport Design wheel and see if it tells me anything about the finish. But I think that is just a spray on clear finish as I believe the housing is aluminum.

I just sold the exact part for a 991.2 steering wheel on Ebay so you can probably find something similar for yours. Search for Steering Wheel "Trim" or "Bezel".

Hard to tell from the images what the overall condition is like but here's an entire steering wheel for about $250 which seems pretty cheap.

great stitching on wheel. I know you can send the wheel in to get the center parts replaced. People often do this fro carbon fiber upgrades. good luck with it.
