Default Tire Mounting Question

So, here’s an interesting, kinda weird situation: I was washing my 2013 991.1 C2S yday and noticed the right rear tire was mounted “inside out”. The Michelin Pilot 4S has “inside” and “outside” printed on the sidewalls, and one rear tire is mounted inside out.

Now, this clearly isn’t right, but how much does it matter? The tires have about 3k on them.

They were mounted over two years ago, and I just noticed! Aside from the obvious answer that the shop should fix (who knows if they will), is it worth the effort to re-mount? I don’t track, but I drive hard, and only in dry conditions.

Any thoughts/input welcome.

thx

I could be absolutely wrong, but I'd assume where it could be a big deal is in the rain. Probably not a big difference on dry pavement.

You might as well get it re-mounted. You'll even the wear from the negative camber anyway. Might want to swap left/right at the same time, too.

While I understand you drive only in dry conditions, the tread is designed for optimal traction in wet or dry conditions when run in the proper direction. So can you run it backwards? Sure. You've already proven that. But why risk it?

tirerack tested this a number of years ago, actually, but not at freeway speeds. there was no meaningful difference in traction, wet or dry, but they speculated that at higher speeds or with more water or standing water the wet traction would be worse with a directional tire mounted backwards.

I would get it fixed. My reasoning is 98% OCD, 2% because tire rack

Forgive me if this is a stupid question. Could he have two left hand tires?

No such thing. Unidirectional tires do not have an inside or outside, to the tire. The ones that do, can be mounted to any corner of the car provide the side labels are followed.
