Driven but not owned 991.1 GTS, 991.2 Carrera T….ended up buying a manual 992S. Couple reasons…

- the current pricing of used cars narrowed the gap on buying new and I could build what I wanted
- the 992 suspension felt a bit more tied down with a better front end
- the engine felt bit more frenetic/emotional/powerful at the top end than the 991.2 did

Cant really go wrong with either. I originally waned a 991.2 Carrera T with PCCB/RAS but gave up the search after while and prices went way up.

Owner of 991.1S, test drive of 992, if you don't care about NA engine, 992 is better or even waiting for 992.2

my price range is 100-125k usd.

any advice from those with more experience? Thanks
FYI. Bert Smith Porsche in St. Petersburg, FL has a 2019 T. Rumor has it it drives nicely 😏. Listed at $129k but maybe there’s room.

I have to agree here. Don't buy a car for more tech. The tech will be completely outdated in 5 yrs. Buy the car that speaks to you as a car, not tech device. The turbo and NA cars have very different driving experiences. Decide which is best for you and then go from there. Anything you get will be great.

Well.. let me chime in.. my first 911 was a low mileage base PDK 14....later a nice base Graphite Blue 991.2..and after that a Miami Blue 992 S w/ RWS ... the last 2 tracked..
and NOW back to a 991.2 BUT key is RWS and PDCC with SPASM...

AVOID.. 991.1.. NA is nice BUT 1st gen electric steering is horrible!.. FEELS like a giant rubber ball turning in hand.... though handling is correct
991.2 is NICE ... forget the updated tech interior of 992.. analog gauges nice and 1700K instant torque.. 992 torque has a slight tip in lag that makes it feel heavy before
it kicks in .. at least on S..BUT electric steering feel is well planted and totally fixed on that generation..

having said that steering handling and feel are NOT an issue on 991.1/2 GT3 they are awesome

All RWD 991.1 have the same steering rack part number from 3.4 Carrera to the 911R…

Wonder if it’s more to do with alignment, tire, spring rates and bushings and maybe software

I replaced my 991.1 C2 Cab with a 991.2 GTS Cab, and have no regrets. I don’t care for the interior styling of the 992, which is clearly just personal opinion. The .2 is faster, tighter, and rides better(admittedly C2 base v GTS). The tech is better. In sport mode with PSE the TT sounds fine to me. Ultimately you need to thoroughly explore your options and make the decision that will be right for you. FWIW this is a proverbial “high class problem”; because whichever 911 you end up with it will be great.

991.2 S owner here. I’ve yet to drive the 992 but haven’t been motivated to explore further for a couple reasons.

For my purposes, the frequency and manner that I use my current 911, it’s been more than enough to satisfy those needs (street use, not a daily driver, etc).

The other issue which is completely personal is I just can’t bring myself to like the looks of the 992. Will revisit things when the next generation arrives but I’m good for now.

If I could only have one car I’d likely be more open to exploring a base 992 C2 but as I understand it those aren’t available in manual which is a showstopper for me.

Good luck with your search. 👍

was 100% happy/thrilled with my 991.1s.....until i drove a 992 (have driven an S and TTS). went 991.1s over 991.2s because i preferred the NA motor. now, i'd go 992s over .1s or .2s because i prefer EVERYTHING about the 992s .... and it's not even close imho. from styling/features too performance, the 992's are a generation ahead (literally). no brainer for me. when i'm able to go 992S, i will.

I recently got to drive a 992 4S for the first time this week. The car is new-ish and with it belonging to a family member, I didn't push it hard or anything like that. However, it was quality seat time through some fun twisty roads and it gave me a good sense of how the car is different to my 991.1.

Right off the bat, it's a real step up from the 991 in every way. It's more comfortable and somehow more capable at the same time. My brain couldn't get around how the suspension felt more competent and more compliant. That's some very impressive engineering Porsche. It's also quick - very very quick. There's a huge wad of torque available with the just the lightest dab of the throttle. I need to engage Sport mode in my 991 for it to feel quick, but the 992 is quick in normal, sport and even wet-mode. Interior materials are top notch too.

The one negative for me was, as impressive as the 992 is, the engine is strong but lacks character. The 991.1 has a delightful low RPM burble and sounds great off the boil when I'm just pootling about town. The 992 has grunt for the ages, but it's accompanied by a low RPM drone. The drone cheers up at the revs increase, but with so much torque available on demand, I didn't really feel the need to rev it all that much. Sport Exhaust actually made matters worse.

Overall though, it's a very a piece of kit. I love my 991, but if I was shopping today it would likely be for a 992.

I own a 991.2 C2S, and drive 992's every other weekend as a coach at PECATL, C2S - C4S - GTS - Targa, you name it.... probably have close to the same mileage on both gens.

Get the newest you can afford. I absolutely love my 991.2, but the 992s feels a bit more refined, sounds fantastic right off the bat (I did headers + cats to bring out the sound in mine), and are overall great cars. They feel 'roomier' inside, but maybe that's just the cabin feel/layout. Can't go wrong with either of these two generations. Otherwise, save a few bucks and instead of buying the 992, do a few mods to the 991.2 or put it towards the 'driver mod' and onto trackdays/tires/brake pads. Just make sure your ultimate goal is aligned with your choice & budget.

any advice from those with more experience? Thanks

I owned a 4C Spider, a 992C4S, and now a 991.2 Targa. Yes, I went from a 992 to a 991.2.

I loved my 4C. I put 20k miles of fair weather weekend miles on it. I would still have it today if it had not been totaled while it was in for its belt service. The 4C is a go kart. There’s nothing with a Porsche badge that will feel that raw. No modern 911 comes close. It shared the garage with my 992C4S, because there was that little overlap between the experiences. If you have the financial means to keep your 4C, keep it.

I put 35k miles on my 992C4S before trading it in for a Taycan 4S. I have more miles in a 992 than the average bear.
I picked up a manual transmission CPO 991.2 Targa to replace the 4C — enthusiast spec with sport exhaust and all of the important stuff.

With that background out of the way, if you’re looking for refinement, the 992 is overall, a more refined experience than the 991.2. The design of the 992 is more cohesive and the interior is visually more pleasing. That being said, IMHO the touch points in a 991.2 feel better. I believe that some things were lost in the translation from the 991.2 to the 992 — it’s crazy little feel and character stuff. Despite modest dimensional differences, there’s no getting around it that the 991.2 feels like a smaller car.

If you can find yourself a CPO 991.2 Carrera T, get that. It’s by no means “raw” compared the 4C, but it will give you all the right notes in the 911 ownership experience. Coming from a 4C, you’re going to like it better than a base 992 Carrera. Porsche does a very nice job with their CPO experience. That’s not say that you can’t find a 992 in that price range, but I’d much rather have a nicely equipped, higher trim CPO 991.2 than a barebones Base 992.

…and whatever you do, do not buy a car without Sport Chrono.

well said, same here.

i recently test drove a 992 a friend of mine got and it is a totally different car compared to my 991 C4S (and I think mine was a launch car). i regularly go from 4000-6000 feet above sea level and we literally got like two feet of snow recently and his car fitted with all-seasons mine proper snow tires ... the first thing you notice is the 992 turbos and that instant torque ... it was a holy **** moment to be honest. feels faster ... not sure it is but it feels much more responsive. the 992 is way easier to enter and exit corners as well -- almost made my 991 feel like it had an extra 500 lbs or so (maybe there is a weight differential i don't know) but the steering on the 992 is just unbelievable. and the cabin, just stunning. Porsche got it all right on the 992. steering feel, steering wheel width feel, more usable cabin, much easier to use power band for daily driving. it is almost worth the abuse from Porsche dealers to get one of these

SO ... I'm selling my 991 for a 992! they are that good. i think the 992 is Porsche's best overall platform (GT cars excluded).
