6 plugs replaced on my GTS for $2200, at 11k miles? Huh? I had a ‘97 Camaro that did 100k miles on a set. Is this just Porsche selling parts and service? Even my SA said ‘pure gimmick by Porsche’. Had an Indy specialist quote $785, thoughts?

That is just scummy overcharging. Porsche charged me $382 to change plugs and coils in 2020.

 

That cannot be right. Maybe just in labor?

Depends on whether its a 991.1 or 991.2 as to how much the overcharge is.....

991.2 requires you to remove some of the Turbo Charger plumbing, much more in-depth disassembly than with a 991.1.

Forgot that I supplied the plugs and coils. Plugs and coils don't cost $1800.

 

I think I paid 700 for 991.2 last spring.

$2200 is egregious. It should be $500-800 from a dealer, provided you're not throwing coils at it for no reason.

Plugs are $120-200 in parts charge alone. if you're doing coils as some kind of preventive maintenance, tack on something like $500-600 more at least. Then the 2.5 hours of labor at $160/hr, and you quickly get into the $1k territory. Half that if you're not doing coils.

As far as it being a 'gimmick' to replace the plugs based on time as well as miles? Hardly. Lots of threads already discussing this, but the tl;dr boils down to galvanic corrosion, yes, despite the coating modern plugs have. Lots more heat in that area on a 201x high-strung sports car versus a 90s understressed muscle car.

 

Sounds very high just for plugs. I paid 1700 for the 4 year service back in July (991.2 4s) that included oil change, brake flush, spark plugs, air filters and cabin filter. Local dealer in NH.

 

My dealer is expensive. For a 991.1 the charge about $800 parts, labor, & taxes included. For my 991.2, I pad $975 part, labor, & taxes. Again, my dealer is expensive and I'm in South Florida with 5 dealers within an hour's drive.

Granted, that doesn't include coil packs which if you round up to say... and additional $600 at $100 a pop... which again, that's crazy town prices... You're still at MAYBE $1600 all in.

For $2200, Are you sure they didn't do your oil and engine air filter? That would seem about right.

 

Having done this myself recently, and mainly cause I was taking the intercoolers cages off and “I was there anyways”, I would say $800-900 at the dealership just for plugs on a 991.2 would be reasonable as it does require quite a bit of disassembly to do it comfortably and properly. Once you factor in labor/hr and overhead, seems like a FMV for the job.

$2200 is flat out ridiculous.

Shop around, go Indy, or get some basic tools, follow a tutorial (plenty out there), and have fun on a weekend at your own pace. Only “special” tool I had to buy was a 14 mm 12 point thin wall magnetic socket. $13 on Amazon. Plugs were $95 after tax from FCP Euro.

I feel like Porsche dealers are jacking up the service prices to cover for lack of volume on the sales side….

i had a 2yr done on a macan and felty pretty dirty about the bill i got. Almost a double fist…. Should have used my indie.
