All car guys are the same. Whenever a new M3 comes out, the BMW guys always swear the last generation was better.

it hard to argue that the evolutionary updates to the 911 over the years aren't improvements.

when porsche makes revolutionary changes, however, like air cooled to water cooled and naturally aspirated to forced induction, that's where there are enough differences that enthusiasts get a chance to argue for their favorites.

having written that, the PCM in the 991.2 is certainly technically superior.

Default 991.1 VS 991.2

I did write a 20 page article in two (2) parts. Part 1 was recently published in the PCA SDR Regon's Magazine, the Windblown Witness. Part 1 is essentially a look at the 997.2 and the 991.1. Part 2 is the 991.2 and my conclusion. Hopefully it will be published soon.

I only knew the 997.2 through research, never owned one, never drive one. I could speak with a degree of authority on the 991.1 Carrera S, as I owned. In Part 2, focusing ion the 991.2 Carrera S. that was written based on research...however it may need some editing. Based on what I discoed about the 991.2 compared to the 991.1, especially the 991.2 GTS, I just bought one and traded in the 991.1.

I think I owe it to any potential readers to add his update to the article. Having had the 991.2 GTS for less than a week, all I can say with no hesitancy, these are are very different beasts. Forgetting all the HP and torque comparisons, the 991.2 GTS that I purchased came with some tasty options I missed having on the 991.1:
  • Lane Change Assist (LCA), works nicely and has a substantial range it would seem,
  • Apple Play and Sirius XM radio,
  • Bose Surround Sound,
  • 14 way power seats, both sides,
  • Sport Chromo and PSRB
  • Monster brakes with what looks to be floating rotors,
  • Heated seats.
  • The wind body look,
  • Come with a supplemental center coolant radiator, cost me $1,000 to add it to my former 991.1
  • Factory supplied Grill Guards appear to be powder coated stainless steel, really rugged.
List of my options below:
BASE 911 Carrera GTS 250 Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) 457 Lane Change Assist (LCA) 541 Seat Ventilation (Front) 581 Luggage net in passenger footwell 583 Smoking package 714 Deletion of Alcantara® 858 GT Sport Steering Wheel 9VL BOSE® Surround Sound System AZ Leather interior in Black N0 Agate Grey Metallic P06 Power Sport Seats (14-way) with Memory Package P3D Premium Package i.c.w. Power Sport Seats (14-way) XSC Porsche Crest on headrests XYH Gear Selector in Brushed Aluminum

What I miss:
  • I can't seem to pull up the circular digital dash display for oil and water temps, along with oil pressure. It's the gauge that has the tire pressure display.
  • The sound of the 991.1 3.8 liter engine heading up to Red Line,
  • Sport Exhaust on the NA engine was a little throatier. The crackle and pop on decelerations the 991.2, seems to not run the full length of the deceleration...maybe I am deaf?
  • 991.2 GTS car comes with Sport Suspension...the car is 20mm lower I believe. I don't have front axle lift so I need to be cautious when parking...I do have those front parking sensors that set to work well. My former 991.1 had standard suspension, not Sport.
In a perfect world, I'd have a 991.1 and a 991.2. , both fantastic cars. I can only imagine with the 992 GTS will be like....maybe I'll put that car on my wish list.

I don’t believe this is correct Martin;

>Come with a supplemental center coolant radiator,<

If yours has it, it was most likely added after purchase as I don’t see it on your options list.

Thanks for your feedback on the center radiator. Enjoy your posts, keep it up.If you want me to send your Part 1 of my article, published in the local PCA rag, I'll mail it to you. Part 2 will be available after it is published.

I really liked my 991.1, and only sold it because I coveted a GTS, 991.1 or 991.2. I passed on a 991.1 GTS with an aero-kit a few years ago...It was selling for $90K. Same car now, $110,000 +. When this 20,000 mile 991.2 GTS came along, I just couldn't say no. And, it was two (2) owner, clean Carfax, and local. The Perfect Buying Storm. Only down side, $125,000....man that's a lot of money. But wifey and I bucked up and I bought it.

Upon closer inspection, all I have on the 991.2 GTS for a center radiator, is the radiator screen, NO RADIATOR. It was never represented as having a center radiator, so I can't bitch....I just assumed, if there is a grill, there must be a radiator behind there, WRONG!!. Suncoast just told me they are not in stock but can be ordered.

BTW, the grills look substantial....metal weave in contrast to The Grill Store plastic weave grill guards I had my 991.1's radiators, left, center (from Suncoast) and right.

I bought what I wanted and I have driven both. How simple is that?

For what it’s worth aside from the lane change assist, you can pretty much mod a 991.1 to get a lot of the same improvements to the 991.2. The engine will obviously be different and then it boils down to if you want a screaming NA engine or a torquey FI engine.

I got a 991.1 GTS last year and have modded it as follows:
- JoyeAuto wireless CarPlay retrofit. Works super well.
- Custom audio upgrade down by Musicar NW in Portland (Morel speakers and Mosconi amp). Makes even the 992 speakers sound awful in comparison.
- Akrapovic titanium exhaust. Enhances that NA sound a lot and gave me 10HP on the dyno
- 991.2 steering wheel retrofit. Works perfectly and gives you the momentary sport+ behavior when button is pressed
- DSC suspension controller
- TPC racing front track width kit. Completely transforms the handling of the car so the steering is much tighter and more responsive
- Tractive DDA suspension. Paired with the DSC controller lets you run GT3 spring rates without affecting ride. Improves grip and body roll tremendously.
- Cobb Accessport with custom tune. Gives me another 15HP and more importantly improves low end torque a bit.

With all that money spent I could have easily gone with a 991.2 or 992. But for me there’s something special about the engine in the 991.1 GTS I just don’t feel driving the .2s or even 992 C2S. Heck, even the .1 non power kit models feel and sound different.

point here is, buy the .2 for the engine not the other goodies. Those improvements can largely be had on the .1 if you’re keen on them (obviously RAS not so much)

Just peeked at this old thread for fun. At the time I started it, I had my 991.2 GTS for a very short time. The previous owner had install ZUNSPORT radiator green screen, all 5 of them. including the middle. To my surprise, there WAS NO CENTER RADIATOR INSTALLED, just the center screen.
I felt really stupid on that one. Wanting a center radiator, I bought a kit from Suncoast and had my local wrench instal it.

Strange, why would Porsche do that to the 991.2 GTS when my 991.1 GTS came factory fitted with it?

Default Rat Bastar..

Maybe N/A is inherently cooler? I know my 991.1 Carrera S didn't come with a center radiator....another radiator kit from Suncoast

Ironically the 991.2s greatest weakness is its brakes…
it doesn’t have the brakes for real track duty.

the 991.1 was slow and had good braking….

I have owned 997.2 , 991.1 and a 991.2
991.2 is my favorite followed by the 997.2 and my least favorite was my 991.1 which I owned only a whopping 2 years.

to each their own.
991.1 is still a great car!
