I know this topic has been thrashed, but hear me out.
I've just picked up my (RWD) 991.2 GTS, and as amusing as it is breaking traction, I'd rather be able to use a bit more of the available torque during less than perfect conditions in here NZ. Especially with my son on board.
The car is a 2018 model, the warranty was good until May 2021 so I assume it is 3 years since sale. Was a South African car, made its way down here. Came with the OEM P zeros, 2017 manufacture. For NZ conditions (frequently wet, going to get cooler until at least October), they are underwhelming. Still a lot of grip on them left, though.
I had the experience of going from 'cooked' Conti Sport Contact 6s to Michelin PS4S on my R8 V10+; not a fair comparison because the tread on the Contis was melted from a track day. But subjectively the Michelins were "wow". Felt like a whole new car.
Do you think I would get similar results if I switched tyre, or am I expecting too much of my car? Launch control at present is wildly optimistic, even in the dry at an ambient temperature of 18 degrees, with moderately warm tyres.
If you can’t launch your car without a bunch of wheel spin and traction control intervention, the tires are done. In 80 deg F weather, the car should slam your eyeballs against the back of your skull on a launch. PS4S are a worthy upgrade, just make sure N0 versions as well.
I'm definitely not upgrading my 2 day old car for a C4GTS! Having owned a succession of Audi's I am looking forward to the purity and challenge of RWD. Besides, I didn't realise just how much I would love my car in Sapphire blue.
It sounds like I should track my car so I can justify taking off the P Zeros and putting on the PS4S's....
Or work a little harder and just pay for the PS4S's.... If I do I will be sure to let you know.
I just switched out my P Zeros for the PS4s on my 991.2 GTS. I did not necessarily plan on doing the PS4s on this car, but I found a slightly used set of HRE R101s that came with the tires already mounted. It may be all in my head but I feel that the PS4s have noticeably less road noise. Road feel is also improved but I can't honestly tell you if that is the tires, very light wheels or a combination of both. I have not done a launch to test off the line traction, but I'm not expecting any miracles since I also just tuned the car.
I also had the PS4s on my R8 and C63. I've been really happy with them as a street tire.
