Default Thinking 991.2

Curious about how owners feel about their cars- Sound, Performance, and reliability.
I have had three 911 and 1 cayman, Just sold the GTS Cayman and probably the best for daily driving.
‘Looking for more power and 3rd car for trips and car week in Carmel.
is this a good way too go-last 911 was a 2007.

Thanks

I have a 991.2 carerra t and love it. I came from a 981 gt4 and have no regrets. I love the tunability of the platform compared to the NA engine (almost 100rwhp with just a tune and no hardware). Comfortable, loud when you want it and quiet at other times. I like the infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and the backup camera. Also love the backseats for the little ones. I am biased but I would suggest either a carerra t or gts with three pedals if that’s an option. The only car I would get rid of mine for is a 991.2 Gt3 touring.

I think you’ll love a 991.2. I have a C2S. I highly recommend MT and PSE.

You are asking people in a Porsche forum... they will say they love it. Go drive a half dozen brands long enough to have a feel for the car, which one brings the most joy. Checks the most boxes?

good luck

oh yeah - I really like my 911. Not as much as my last sports car, but it’s a blast and checks a lot of boxes. I can drive all year round (I’m in cold/snow climate). And has great reliability. I drive to hardware store, cross country and the race track, not many cars can do all three well.

^ Same, though plain Carrera, and same: No regrets about the move from 981 GT4 to 991.2.

Maybe I'd feel differently had I been tracking the GT4 more often than I did, but this isn't a chapter with a lot of time for track days. Also agree with the idea that the 991.2 is more comfortable, loud (enough) when you want it and quiet at other times—and this with the standard exhaust in my case. In fact, part of what I like about the car is that it doesn't advertise every ankle flex in the way my GT4 did. I second the recommendation on T or GTS with the 7MT, but I wouldn't pass up a Carrera 7MT or Carrera S 7MT with the right options.

You've owned 911s in the past so they apparently satisfying.

Having driven Caymans, Boxters and various 911 models on the street and track, I found that the 911s (the 991.2 and 992), felt more solid and composed on track and off. For everyday use I'd select a 911. That being said, If were tracking a Porsche consistently, I'd go with a Boxster/Cayman but you're looking for something else.

I ordered a '19 C4S manual, few cosmetic options, with the Sport Package, and couldn't be happier. 15k miles in two years.

As to other models/manufacturers, nothing out there pulls on me except a Miata which fits the fun to drive desire.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the great responses.
‘I completely forgot about the 911 T and love the options it comes with- Definitely on the list.
Going to drive a 2019 C2S at a dealer this week. The GTS is probably a little out of my price range but I wouldn’t mind finding a 2015-16 GTS. Not a lot of cars out there right now plus I have the affliction of Bright colors which makes even tougher.
Thanks again

I’ve just traded my 718 GT4 for a 991 T having had a few 911 over the years. The GT4 was a brilliant machine but it was just too intense for me, you have to scream it to get the best out of it and those opportunities are few and far between where I live.

The T is completely different, far more relaxing with a compliant ride and probably just as quick with a heap more low down torque.

I don’t think you’ll go wrong with any 991.2 they are seriously impressive and the engine in particular loses nothing being turbocharged, it’s as characterful as my much loved 997 X51 which is high praise (without the constant bore score worry!)

I'll layer on that a 991.2 is a great spot in the 911 lineup currently; it's the most modern short of the much more expensive 992, and many would argue it looks better (to me they both look fantastic), and for most reasonable people the engine is unequivocally improved over the 991.1. There's just so much more USABLE power, and it's almost just as fun to drive to grab takeout as it is on a windy back road. It also still sounds great and loves to rev. I'd understand the criticism if there was the severe drop off in sound quality like what happened with the 981 vs 718 (4), but that's nowhere near the case with these 3.0L turbo engines, even without the PSE (although it is a worthwhile option if you can find it). The benefits far outweigh the slight noise disadvantage.

There's also the improved steering, shifter feel, and suspension over the 991.1, and for me the infotainment was nearly enough to make my decision by itself. I think it looks better too with the subtle aesthetic changes but that's picking nits; all 991s are great looking cars.

I'd also recommend rear axle steering and sports suspension. Rear axle steering can only be spec'd on an S, T, or GTS (and also something you can't get in a 991.1).

I am on my third Porsche. Started with an 07 Cayman S I bought used. Drove it 5 years. Moved to a new 2018 718 S. Only drove it a year. I just didn’t have the same level of satisfaction after a drive. I was actually almost fatigued and bored after coming back from my weekly 50+mile fun drives.

Lucked into a new 2019 911T. Absolutely no regrets even with taking the depreciation hit on a new 718 I only kept a year. The 911T is exactly what I want. No plans whatsoever to move on from it. If anything I will buy a second Porsche and keep the T for the long haul.

All have been a manual and will likely always buy a manual unless I step into a Turbo S as a retirement gift in a decade or so.

Porsche was genius developing an affordable entry level car in the cayman and boxter. Perfect stepping stone to the car most kids dreamed about growing up.

I can second the praise of the 911's long distance legs.

Have driven mine on trips throughout the SE US, on every kind of road, for as long as 6+ hours, and never felt overly tired. Concentrating on driving and traffic, that was where the fatigue came from, not the car.

The ability to scoot through and away from wolf packs, good visibility, rock solid handling yet compliant even with 20" tires and average 29 MPG, what more could you ask for?

My 991.2 S was my first Porsche (previously lots of RS Audis and BMW M cars), and I absolutely love it. With other cars within a year I found myself looking again, but so far I can't imagine selling my 911 except for maybe another one (although I don't like the 992 as much). It excels at almost everything, and I can even fit my 5yo in the back. There's just something magical about the size, rear engine (which also allows for the perfect driving position and incredible steering feel), and presence. It doesn't turn heads in a weird look-at-me way, but those who know appreciate it. This surprised me frankly, as it's "just" an S and nothing crazy, but it's classy and fun and all the good stuff in one.

I will say, the S is faster than I expected. I likely would have been happy with a base/T. It'll lose traction easily through second gear, which is a ton of fun. I do sometimes feel like the exhaust note is meh, but at wide open throttle above 4k I don't find it lacking.

When I picked it, I drove 3.5 hours back home, and enjoyed every minute of it. I have the 14-way seats fwiw, but both options are incredibly comfy and the driving position is just so perfect.
