Default Tire Preferences?

I'm about to pick up tires for 991.1 Carrera S, factory rims looking at tires at usual suspects. Can't decide on brand right now. Assume most folks go with Michelin, Pirelli or Continental. I read some reviews and Michelin>Continental>Pirelli

Curious if people feel strongly about the following?

Priced from high to low in rough groups
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 - $1700
Michelin Pilot SPort 4S - $1343
Michelin Pilot Super Sport - $1307
Pirelli P Zero Z4 Sport $1212
Pirelli P Zero $1169
Continental Extreme Contact Sport $1171

Assuming no one recommends
Bridgestone Potenza RE980AS - $975
Toyo Proxes Sport - $775
Nitto Motivo - ??? <$800
Yokohama Advan Apex V601 - $919
Kumho ECSTA PS91 - $674 - Wow these are cheap. LOL

Forgot to mention I'm in San Diego, so very little rain, no snow, pretty moderate temps. No autocross, etc.

So, no track? You're going to get a bunch of people saying "Sport Cup 2s", then another bunch saying "PS4S because you're not on the track", others saying "You've gotta go N0 or N1 so that rules out any non-Porsche-OEM'd tires". I mean it all depends on what you're looking to do with it. Sport Cup 2s are marketed as "track tires that can be run on the street", PS4S as "street tires that can be run on the track". Almost nobody will recommend Pirelli's because their grip sucks, some people will swear by the AS tires because they never track and live in colder climates.

For me: I track, I live in the Northeast, and I run Sport Cup 2s. I did run PS4S, but regularly shredded those on the track (on the street, they're marvelous). My wife's car had ExtremeContact, and they're good. I think it's hard to choose between those and PS4S.

In my opinion:
  • Best grip == Sport Cup 2
  • Best all-round including wet weather - PS4S
  • Also really good: ExtremeContact

You don't need Cups. Get the PS4S. Done.

I have Toyo Proxes on my car now, they're fine for non ice/snow conditions. I'll be due for tires son and plan on the Continentals. I've had those on a different car and they were better than expected. I also had Pilot Sports on a previous car and to me they were fairly unremarkable on that car. Disclaimer is that I use my car as a DD, so ultimate performance is not my goal at all.

I always had Conti's on my previous cars and was very happy with them. Still riding the the OEM Pirelli's on my T but will probably get the Continentals when I need to replace them.

Thanks all for feedback, appreciate the perspectives. I need to get TPMS sensors installed when mounted, anyone have any issues with someone like Tire Rack, Discount Tires, Big O, etc doing the TPMS install balance/mount?

Most folks on the forum seem to prefer Michelin PS4S to Pirelli P-Zeros. The problem for a 991.1 C2S is the standard OEM tire for the car was 245s in front and 295s in the rear (305 rear was optional with different wheels). Why is that a problem? Because Michelin didn’t make an N-spec tire in the 295 size for the rear. So you were stuck with Pirelli unless you upped the rears to 305s, which Michelin made. But that is not a problem any more. This winter, Michelin introduced the PS4S in an N0-spec 295 size, so now you really have a choice (assuming you didn’t want to bump up to 305s for the rear). I’ve got Pirellis on my 991.1 C2S now and just yesterday ordered a set of Michelin PS4S in 245/295 sizes. I’m looking forward to seeing if the hoopla for the Michelins is true. I can’t stand my Pirellis - they are loud, harsh, and ride like hockey pucks in cooler (eg, 50-degree) weather. I understand the Michelins are supposed to be much better in these departments, but I’ll re-post next week with my impressions after they’re on the car.

I've had terrible service from Pirellis, so no more.

I've had good service from Michelins across various vehicles. On the 911, for a low aspect tire, the PS4S rides as good as anyone can hope and not overly noisy.

Except for bad luck picking up nails, no complaints. I'll stick with the PS4S.

I bumped to the 305s ps4s and very happy with that decision. Car is really stuck.

I replaced the OEM's last fall with PS4S's. I've only put a couple hundred miles on them but I will always be a fan of Michelin's. I have them on my C7, CTS4 and Avey....

The simple answer is ↑ ↑ ↑

My only experience is with Pirelli P-Zero and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. My car had roughly 20k miles when I replaced the Pirellis.

Most of us don't get to compare the tires fairly since the tires coming off the car have much less thread and are harder than when they were new but I do believe the Michelins are much better. I took my wheels to Tire Rack and had them mount & balance them, then I drove the car to the dealer for a 4-wheel alignment. I highly recommend having your alignment checked as this made a huge difference on my car. It didn't feel like it needed it on the way there (37 miles) but the car felt much sharper after they did it.

I'd lean toward the dealer for the TPMS sensors so that they take care of getting them to pair with the PCM. Check with your dealer on options and pricing for everything. The one I go to would allow me to bring the tires and they'd do everything for a very reasonable price. I only chose to have them installed at the local Tire Rack because I have center-lock wheels and I wanted to clean & coat the wheels without tires on them.

Im talking summer non track tires, Why is it only Pirelli or Michelin all the time? No one else can make a tire good enough for our 911s?
