Default 2 post or 4 post

Are the two post lifts significantly wider than the 4 post units, assuming this is needed to be able to open the doors? I like the idea of the 2 post unit to be able to remove wheels and do work but don't have much space if extra wide.

Thx

100% this.

If you plan to do any actual work on a car, get a 2-post. Benefit of a 2-post is you can also store with it, just rest the car on the locking pawls.

If size is a concern, you're in luck. All lifts have very detailed specifications published alongside them. For example, look at this bendpak lift -- scroll down to "features and specs" and you'll see all the dimensions.

I prefer the two-post for a few reasons. One, it doesn't take space at the corners of the cars. If space is tight at all, having the corners open is more beneficial IMO. For storage I also prefer 2-post as you get no flat spots on the tires and it unloads the suspension. Far easier you work on the car, and more space to do so, unless you only plan on doing oil changes and swapping out the cat-back. Lastly, if you do store a car underneath, you have way more access around the car and don't have to be nearly as careful pulling a car in under the top car.

4 post for space concerns and storage as others have said. 2 post for wrenching but you will need LOTS more height (minimum 12-14 ft) and width.

They also have single post lifts as well that can hold up to 6,500 pounds. I intend to install one of those for car storage purposes.

I have a narrower but tall garage and the single post lifts look like they take up a lot less room.

But they are expensive. I’ve heard it’s anywhere from $6500 to $8000 installed.
