Default 991 as Daily Driver??

Hi everyone
Thinking a lot about getting another 911 after a 13 year hiatus (last one being a 996 targa) and was originally planning to add to the fleet to complement my '15 A8. Our other car is a '19 Q7 and which my wife drives and functions as our family vehicle. Space constraints (garage and driveway configuration) has me rethinking the 3rd car so now I'm thinking about just dumping the A8 in favor or a 997.2 or a 991.1. We are a family of 4. How doable is a 911 as a daily driver under this scenario with the other car being a Q7? Am I just hoping it will work when in reality it won't?

Depends on what your day looks like. The 911 works for me with 2 young kids but for me the SUV is the primary family car as getting kids out and in the rears is less easier in the 911 but works for school/day car pickups, etc.

In your scenario, 991 > 997 thanks to that 4-inch wheelbase stretch.

Then it just comes down to how tall all of you are. My wife, who is 5'6 to 5'7, can't sit in the back of a 997 without leaning forward to clear the glass. She can sit in the back of a 991 normally—behind another adult up to, say, 5'11ish. I'm 6'2, so the 991 works for our family with no problems with the parents up front and an elementary school kid in the back—even for 3-4 hour drives. Not so sure another kid sitting behind me would be fun, however. For them or me...

My 911 cab is my daily driver, just put the snows on today. Luckily my wife and I are not vertically gifted at 5' 7" and our kids are still fairly young so they have no problems fitting in the back.

My 991.1 is definitely not our family car. I'm not sure I'd enjoy it as much if it was.
Our poor F-150 takes all that use and abuse. Much more roomy, comfortable, flexible, and practical for hauling us all around. It's our "do everything" rig and the 67k miles in just over 3 years proves that.

I have two 991 DDs, a .1 GTS cab and a .2 Touring. Both make FANTASTIC daily drivers, for very different reasons. All things considered, the GTS is the more supple DD. It can be sporty or luxury sedan-ish, depending on your mood. The GT3 Touring is always in beast mode but most definitely can be driven remarkably comfortably, even in bumper to bumper traffic (ask me how I know, living by the beach in LA and working in Beverly Hills). I don't think you will be disappointed if you join the 991 club.

I’ve daily driven a 991 for the last 4 years and have really enjoyed it. That said, if you will need to cart the little ones around with any frequency it might be challenging. Rear facing car seats are technically possible but render one seat unusable. Front facing car seats are easier to install but legroom is still limited and getting little ones into the back takes some effort. I invested in another car to use when transporting my daughter - she’s all of 3 weeks old but that decision has proved itself correct time and time again already. Now if you only need to take your kids along a few times a month then go ahead and get the 911.

Cheers,
NF.

Like many on this forum, I have a 991.1 to commute and drop kids to school, have fun on the road and it's a competitive occasional track car (only the brake pads are inadequate if you push them hard)... a fantastic car !

Default Not for me

And would not work. A golf R and wrangler split the daily drive duty. This is somewhat excessive as I work from home and have groceries delivered but it seems to work out well.

A 911 as a DD in Connecticut? That's a risky one. Just fire the wife and kids "due to a staff reduction", problem solved.

I've had a 997.1 and jumped to a 991.1. The 991 is much more suited for daily driving, more comfortable, spacious (in 911 terms of course) and livable.

Keep the A8 mate, use it a your DD and get a 911 as a weekend toy.

My vote goes toward keeping the A8. My kids are older and both drive so that wasn’t the issue. After initially using my prior ‘17 C4S as a daily, it didn’t take long for me to realize that I was putting on a ton of “empty” miles - sitting in traffic during commute, work meetings outside the office, etc. Started to make my time in the car seem less special so I got a separate daily and reserved the 911 for fun drives. That made me realize that I wanted something a little more involved and raw (and more useless for just about anything other than driving fast) so I moved to a ‘20 GT4. You can use the car as a daily and it works well but for me it wasn’t really why I wanted to own the car, just took me a little while to figure that out.

I daily my 991
live in so cal by the beach tho.... fun and sun all year
not that i wouldn’t drive it in poor weather with proper tires on it but having lived in the northeast for several years given the way they maintain roads I’d grow weary of wheel replacements.
the utility of the car is good. Frunk holds a lot
home depot trips get the macan tho....

I had missed the Connecticut part. Tunnel vision due to California...

I would probably keep the A8!

I have been DD my 991 for the last year. Works great, but @ 6'3" the seat behind me not useable.
