Default Weird Smudges in Tint

Has anyone seen marks similar to below in their tint? It only shows up under bright light at an angle. The tint is Llumar Formula 1 Pinnacle 30%

it’s been over 2 months since the tint was applied

If it's had ample time (2+ weeks) to evaporate and outgas and still has those marks, call your tint shop. Looks like poor prep cleaning to me.

Yeah definitely call the shop that did it. They should be willing to redo that window free of charge. If it's only in that one window, it should be easy for them to understand it's either an issue with the film itself or the work.

make sure you do due diligence and clean it with a lint free cloth and non-ammonia based glass cleaner on both sides before storming in there complaining about a specific lighting situation being unsightly!

These are what we call "Ghost Fingers". I am a LLumar Window Film Dealer and have been in the window film industry since 1999. Once window film patterns are cut (or plotted in the case of many high-volume shops), almost all are shrunk with a heat gun to the curvature of the glass on the outside. This is so that the film lays as it should without "fingers" popping up and creasing/sucking in debris particles during installation on the inside surface of the glass.

The Pinnacle product is fairly thick so if too much forming is focused on one area, the coloration and structure of the film in that area can be changed permanently which results in the odd-colored zig-zag patterns. The only way to prevent this is to spread out the film to be shrunk more widely along a larger area, thereby dispersing the amount of shrinkage in one section and avoiding/minimizing this effect.

The type of Ghost Fingers present appear to be caused by wet-shrinking, which is fine in most cases, but in the case of this film on that window, perhaps they should attempt dry-shrinking as one would on a rear or front windshield, which is commonly done by coating the exterior of the glass with dryer sheet residue instead of water solution for the heat-shrink process.

I second what Shadeandsound said. That is 100% shrink color distortion. 911's are easy to tint so most will shrink the film wet because it is quicker. Certain films do not like that technique. Unfortunately that is not going away and can only be fixed with a redo.

Thanks for the insight, I will talk to the installer. This is the second time I’ve had them repair the tint...

maybe third time is a charm? Maybe ask for a refund and move onto a more qualified shop?
