I recommend the same movement as in the videos here but with the back of your hand (fingers). Most the time, just the hair on your hand will activate it but even if you touch it a bit, you will rarely if ever get a smudge. Use the back of the hand method and get close to 100% success with a lower chance of smudges.

There is definitely a sweet spot. I use this quite frequently. I never actually touch the hood, just wave slowly below the emblem. Sometimes I get it quicker than other times.
