Default Rattle on startup at times - normal chain tensioner sound?

I have a 2019 911T I bought new. I have 7500 miles on it. Sometimes it will have a short rattle on startup that sounds like a chain. Very short, not even a second probably. I assume it’s the timing chain before it’s gotten tension on it? Doesn’t it require oil pressure for proper tension or am I completely wrong on that?

i have not really paid a lot of attention to it but I am pretty sure on a completely cold start it does not make the rattle. On a warm engine that has sat for a while is when it seems to happen.

Normal operation?

Great question. On occasion, I have had the same sound emanate from the rear of my 991.1 GTS. I have never figured out what it is but it does sound like a chain that is getting stretched out and/or engaged on something, like you might hear on a bike when changing gears. Engine has always run flawlessly which is why I have not spent too much time looking into it, but I am glad that you asked.

Mine does the same thing once every 50 or more times. It sounds like a metal license plate frame rattling. I was told from P service that they do that once in a while. I don't know what causes it but it sounds like something is wrong for that half a second.

I hope you've changed the original oil?

Start using A40 Porsche approved Mobil 5W50.

yes, it’s has its first oil change already. Oil level is fine. Dealer did first chance and will likely do most of them. I am sure they used 0W40 mobile one, isn’t that what Porsche recommends?

My PSE exhaust valves rattle once in a while on start up until they close.

If you do not specify then yes, they will use 0/40; however, 5/50 is also an approved oil. See the attached:

Focus people, focus. BTW, my 2018 Carrera T also gets the random rattle at startup for a split second. I haven't really looked carefully, but I assume it's a heat shield, exhaust valve or somehow exhaust related. Also, for me it only happens after having driven the car hard for a bit, stopping for a break and re-starting within an hour or so. Meaning, it seems to happen when there's heat expansion/contraction. I have never really heard it when starting cold, but maybe I just can't hear it given cold starts tend to be louder.

It’s not from chains or any internal engine parts, it’s from the exhaust. It’s totally normal. As soon as there’s a minimal amount of pressure and/or heat in there, it stops.

my 991.2 has 70,000 km and has been doing it since new. Many services and a few mods later, it’s still doin it. 👍
