Default Shiney dirty Steering Wheel Leather..Mr. Clean Dry Erase it!

So my new to me Used 2012.5, 991 with its Luxor Beige interior the steering wheel leather was all shiny, dirty and not supple. So I looked online and found an a video about using a Mr. Clean Eraser cleaner on it. And I have to say the results are amazing. No more shine, tons of dirt came out of it.

Didn’t get a good before picture, but I can tell you it was dirty and shiny.

Here’s a few after pics. I also did the PDK shift **** leather.

Amazing results. Be careful not to scrub too hard you can scrub through the leather.

YMMV proceed at your own risk!!

I have done the same in the past-they say that the chemicals in the magic eraser are bad for the leather...but mine is holding up just fine 5 years later.

Thank you for your reply..., i dont see any harm in cleaning it once in awhile you can monitor the leather as you go... worst comes to worst you replace it or recover it... this was a simple solution to a grimy, shiny wheel that actually to me made the car look old inside...

Honestly, you are taking a risk using the magic eraser. The chemicals will eat at, discolor and dry your leather out. I suggest a mild leather cleaner followed by a good leather moisturizer. Mild soap an water would have worked just as well.

The magic eraser is a great tool for removing shine from leather but it needs to be used very sparingly. As stated, water and soap is almost as effective without the potential to degrade.

I used it lightly and rinsed well with fresh water after use.... Honestly doesn't bother me one bit, I don't think many chemicals got transferred into the leather...

No offense fellas, thats why I say proceed at your own risk just passing it along..

Thank you for the replies.!!

Yes, not saying you did anything wrong. I'm sure you took the nasty oil and shine out. It's a good trick.

Mr clean is both chemicals and actually 1000 or 3000 grit sand paper.

Found this out years ago the combination of water and the sponge makes for a nice wet sander.

My apologies, I didn't mean to come off like I did... I can see how people have differing opinions....

I certainly will use a good leather conditioner on it as well....

Thank you!

Why not just use a proper dedicated leather cleaning system? They are not expensive and are meant to clean coated leathers. After stripping the oils and dirt from the shiny leather, it should coated with a top coat to protect the original leather’s clear coat.

Absolutely not. Ivory Soap and Water is all you need to clean a steering wheel (I am in the leather business). You are degrading the leather using any kind of abrasive product and removing the topcoat. Sorry to have to correct you, but others need to know so they don't do this.

Follow up with a quality leather conditioner. The proper cleaners/conditioners/protectants will go a long way in preserving any leather. This is what I use in my Porsche and all leather upholstery in my own home, (full disclosure, I sell these kits in my retail store)
