Default Question for Targa owners

I've never actually gotten close to one in person, so I have a question about the roof. Is it basically a hardtop with a cloth covering? Are there gaps in the magnesium panels when the roof is closed that something like a knife would get through? Thanks!

Is this a recurring nightmare of yours...somebody chasing you with a knife, you hop in your targa and they start slashing.....

EDIT: The targa top has magnesium panels with fabric. It has wires within it to pull and fold the top when opening it. So, it indeed can be knifed and slashed, albeit may take more work than convertible top. You can see part of interior from this thread:

And this video of someone slashing a porsche convertible top, so it does happen.

[QUOTE=T3X4S;16706083]The targa top is just fabric will multiple layers.<

I don’t believe that’s correct. My understanding is that there are two magnesium panels covered in fabric.

I am sure however that if someone was determined enough to penetrate the top with a knife, they could succeed.

Thanks, looks like you actually own a Targa, so let me refine the question. I'm not worried about theft, I'm just curious about how much of the roof is rigid panel under the cloth. Obviously, I don't want to poke at someone else's Targa with a finger, I was just curious about how much coverage the magnesium bows have under the cloth. Like if there was no cloth would there be gaps anywhere in the panels? 991 Cabrio is effectively a retractable hardtop too except for the C-pillars.

Nope, just an engineering question about the roof. I used the knife as just an example, but mainly I wanted to know how much of the closed roof is rigid under the cloth. Make sense?

To answer your question, I went out and pressed down firmly with my hand and only the fabric moved slightly down to the solid plate. So it is solid but would not hold up to significant weight without bending.

I found diagrams from a couple of Porsche dealer parts site including Suncoast. What I find interesting in both diagrams is that they do not show the panels as two separate pieces since it folds in two when the top is down.

Thanks, the magnesium bow looks pretty substantial in this video as the back of it is ribbed since it's a casting.

Second panel is here:

FYI, I highly advise downloading the PET for your car, easier to keep on your ipad (sync to Books) and search everything in one shot. Looks like for all intents and purposes it's a hardtop with a pad on it and fabric on top. I imagine the holes are for some retention devices for the fabric and pad.

Thanks for sharing your experience with your car.

It is closer to a folding hardtop than convertible top by far, and it seems like a Coupe when inside with the top up and basically looks like one from inside since it has the same kind of headliner.

And the Targa in Post #3 is ancient and not like the new ones!
