Default Redline at Break-in

Hello All,

Looking at another 2019 GTS CPO at a Porsche dealer that only has about 2000 miles. As part of the process I requested the DME or rev report on the car. It came back pretty damn close to perfect.

Only 97 ignitions in stage 1 and 6 ignitions in stage 2. I was really happy until I looked closer and saw that the 6 ignitions in stage 2 happened with on SIX HOURS on the engine...

The most recent stage 1 over rev was logged at 90 hours, so clearly very few over revs at that sixth hour of operation, BUT that's not the tightest adherence to the break-in procedure. I'm not kidding myself that I'll find a car that was broken-in completely by the book or one that was never driven hard, but would you be bothered by a redline hit that early in the cars life?

Thanks for you thoughts on the matter.

Some believe that is how the motor should be broken in - periodic, short-duration, full-throttle to redline: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Porsche would say limit max rpm to around 4000 until 1000km. So as new car buyers we all have choices to make. Break in by the book or drive it like you stole it or something in between. Then this can lead to a discussion on oil consumption and the relationship to breakin procedures but that is a whole separate and equally fun topic.

I would not be bothered by it but I kept my car at or below 4k rpms until 1500 miles and then started to gradually increase them until I hit 2000 miles, and always when the oil is fully warmed. I have followed the book but that car does not seem to have been abused; however, I do like to buy new so I know for sure how a vehicle has been treated.

Drive it gently when cold, regardless of mileage.

Car at PSDS come with delivery miles and are immediately driven without restraints on the track. I got a GTS and TTS literally just off the truck with 20mls on the odometer, they didn't even put stickers in them and went straight to the track. The only cars they hold back and break in are the GT3 variants.

Every Porsche engine is run hard on a dyno b4 installation. IMO, one of the resins for the recommended break-in is to get the driver used to the car so he doesn't do something really stupid. Having said that, i do break mine in a bit carefully not pushing the engine past 4500 or so, for more than a few seconds. It will break in faster at higher rpm tho, so if wanting to hurry your break - in time, cruise at near 4000 in a lower gear, instead of trying to get the highest gas mileage and lugging the engine at 2000 rpm.
