Default X-Post from 991 Turbo - Rust on my wheels?

This is a cross-post from what I posted over on the Turbo forums. Thought I'd share this over here too ... "a wider net..." type of mentality

Recently (two weeks ago) purchased a new 2019 Turbo. Today I noticed some brake squealing at every light, so I figured it was time for a wash.

After only owning the car for two weeks and 1500 miles I didn't expect to see rust on the wheels. I tried cleaning it off to see if it was possibly something else besides rust, to no avail. You can drag your nail on the wheel and feel the spots. Multiple wheels. Front and rear.

Any thoughts or experience with this?

Detailers use these types of products for this very purpose.

https://www.autopia-carcare.com/carpro-trix.html

You may want to contact a local shop for advice.

Source could be the brake pad material or the discs, unless you're running ceramics.

Since you can feel it, it's a deposit. I would try paint cleaning clay.

It is coming from your brake rotors getting wet. Next time you wash, drive and brake for a short distance promptly after washing. Sometimes I just drag my brakes while driving 10 yards in the driveway.

It's interesting you say that ... Because after the first wash when I got it home -- I did just that...washed it and parked it, didn't drive it at all.

So as others and yourself have said ... I'm going to use some iron cleaner to hopefully rid the surface of the contaminate and then drive it after washing. Thanks!

You've already gotten great advice regarding the iron remover and clay bar.

The only other thing I'd add is a MasterBlaster car dryer for the win!

You can get the junior edition, which is cheaper and what I did. May not get the @LexVan seal of approval but it does work. I do recall seeing posts that you can get discounts on the MB; might be worth a google as I think it can save a good amount of money.

Yup same here. Little low on power, but it gets the good majority off so less wiping the paint. Especially works for those areas that tend to drip a lot after (mirrors, gas cap, door handles).

And if you've never used these specialty iron cleaners before, make sure you are in well ventilated area, because they S T I N K, due to the chemical reaction.

If you cannot get them off talk to your dealer since you just bought it new. You removed the PCCBs already?! Plan to track it?

HA! I like the way you think ... I added that to the possible gift list!

SO, I found this at the local auto parts store ... and

1) it smelled awful (you nailed that)
2) it worked! I tested in a VERY small section last night and it all lifted all those deposits right off the wheel! Then proceeded to use on the rest of the spots - again sparingly as I didn't want to go overboard and somehow damage the wheels.
