Default Dying seats

Hi all,

I am bored to death due to lock down and have been trying to come up with new projects... And I think I got one. I am think about dying the seat and back cushions of the front seats red (my seats are black).

I dyed a few small areas (pdk sifter, arm rest) and the results were good. I was wondering if anyone has experiment anything like this..

Any suggestions, comments or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance and stay safe.

Hmmm, I seem to recall a really good thread and seat dye result years ago in the 996 Turbo forum, but I haven't owned one for 7 or so years so I don't know that the threads would be archived that far back.

Do you have perforated seats? If so that may add some complexity to it. Personally I wouldn't attempt something like this unless you are ok with possibly having to buy new seat leather or a set of used seats if it doesn't come out as expected.

This place sells everything you need and has instruction. Be aware though it is quite a process. Most folks who do it sand/scuff the original leather so the new dye takes hold and cures solid.

I have experience with this. In short, you won’t be able to dye a dark color to red and have it come out acceptable to most. Red is the color that is hardest to take. Easier to dye from lighter colors to dark. I dyed an interior from tan to bmw cinnamon in the past. In the end, tons of work and I would just get them re-stitched.

Thanks for your input. I heard that too. That's why I am considering applying couple of layers of white first to make the transition from black to red easier.

Too many coats will cause it to crack and flake...

Polobai is spot on. You don't want too many coats. You want to do your best at removing/scuffing the existing dye coat off and then applying the new color.

Himm. Sounds logical! I will keep in mind. Thank you both for your inputs.
