Without reading the entire thread...I am sure someone else mentioned it though. If you don't need 4 seats, get the Spyder. This is coming from someone who owns a 991 cab (we need 4 seats though). The Spyder is simply incredible if you want a true open top roadster experience. The cab is 85% of the way there in terms of experience, noise, handling....the Spyder isn't regarded as the car most tied to Porsche's roots for nothing.
The cab and targa are both great! I am not a huge fan of the rag-top look of our cab (my wife loves it), but for what it is, it looks as good as a rag-top style can look. With the top down, the proportions are again about as good as anyone could expect. The Targa looks sleeker and different, and I love watching it operate. It is HEAVY though, if that matters to you. The Targa is what, 300lbs heavier than the cab? Not everyone cares, but we take our cab to DE days where it easily keeps up with prepped 600hp+ cars. The Targa will as well, but the extra weight will be a negative in terms of driving dynamics. Again, nothing really beats a Spyder in terms of dynamics, but if you have to have 4 seats, either will do.
If cost is no object and you don't care about weight, I think the Targa looks better and is a work of art. In hot areas, the cab top is closed for much of the year anyways; I bet those living in Alabama will say cab season is September-May. The Targa gives you the light year-round. People in San Diego won't care as much; it is top-down weather every day of the week.
Still though, if we didn't need 4 seats, there is no question in my mind that our cab would be listed for sale and would be replaced by a 981 or even 987 Spyder. I consider a 991 C2S cab quite the consolation prize however!
