Personally, I’m a cabriolet guy. I’ve owned two 911 cabriolets, and I can’t see myself without one in my garage. I think the coupe looks better than the cabriolet with the top up, but nothing beats the look of the cabriolet with the top down. I don’t track my cabriolet. I didn’t buy it for that purpose. If I wanted a track car, I’d buy a coupe.

I love the look of the Targa, and they’re certainly unique in the automotive world. That said, it’s not quite a cabriolet, and it’s not quite a coupe. It’s a compromise on both fronts. I know some will argue that it’s the best of both worlds, but I’m not one of them. In my opinion, if you really want an open air driving experience, then you should buy a cabriolet.

That’s my 2¢ worth of advice!

I love a Vert but a 911 with the top down has a rear hump that looks too bloated for me...due to the engine placement of course.

We've got one of each - a 997 Cab & the new 991.2 Targa we just took delivery of this week. They're both amazing, but I'm for Camp Targa for the following reasons:
  • The Targa has better visibility through the back end. Our cab is fun to drive, but its rear visibility sucks.
  • It's just damn sexy looking. Everyone puts out a convertible, but nothing looks like the Targa. It's just gorgeous.
  • It's prettier with the top up than the cab is.
Okay, it's a short list, but I've always thought that the Targa is truly the prettiest car out there.

I have had various convertibles for past 20 yrs and most recently, both a 991 convertible and now a 991 Targa; for me, its a no brainer- the Targa all day long.

Not a comment about preference, but right now plenty of used 991.2 Targa's available and very few cabs. Been looking for a GTS Cab and can't find the right one. There are about 10-15 Targas out there available now, but no cabs.

There are 13 listed on cars.com
people are inconsistent with the nomenclature.
I did a search for 2017-2019 and convertible
then did a refined search clicking all the GTS variations

Thanks to both for sharing what's out there! I've been monitoring cars.com and other sites daily. Of the 13 listed, 10 are 2019's that are either new or over budget. I'm also a little particular about color and interior color. (Need to satisfy both me and my wife!) I'll be patient and find one eventually!

IMO the Targa does look better but I also think the Coupe looks even better than the Targa. Personally, I'd rather have a coupe with a sunroof than the targa... the extra weight and the compromise design is trying too hard to be a goldilocks option. I went with a Cab. I'd also say get a minimum of an S with a targa with the weight so you can have the little extra power whereas with a cab I think a base is fine - of course an S is better I love my cab and after 5,5 years I have no regrets with the decision. This is just my worthless opinion. As others have suggested - get what you want!

Looking for Graphite Blue, Silver, or Chalk. PDK, must have black interior. Have also looked "down" to C4S options and "up" to Turbo options. I've called about four different cars in last month where I was going to make an offer but all had sold. Like I said, I'll find something eventually!

Having had a few Cab/Boxsters over the last 15 years, I'd say don't overlook or underweight the value of being able to open/close the top on the move....can't do it in Targa. Also can't operate the Targa open/close mechanism in a tight space (e.g. with closed garage door behind) as it requires a certain minimum space to rear to accommodate the movement. Plus it's way heavier and (according to reviews) has more wind noise/buffeting when open. If the aesthetics outweigh these practical issues (and it does look great, no question) go for it.

Sure you can, but only up to about 10mph with the SmartTop module...I open/close my Targa top while moving a lot. And no one here with a Targa has reported buffering - several threads with posts by many Targa owners. And it is not "way" heavier - I get almost no body roll with my DSC Module. So, what "practical issues" are you talking about?

A lot of love for the Targa on this thread, justifiably so. But I am in the cab camp. The Targa wins on the looks. The cab wins on the true top-down driving experience. The Targa can't compare to the cab when it comes to the sensory experience of driving with the windows down and wind screen down. The smells, the sound, everything about the driving experience is taken to another level of awesomeness with the cabriolet top down. Can't go wrong with either option, just personal preference. Lately, my cab has been collecting dust as I drive my Touring more and more. Poor me.
