Default 7spd PDK vs. 8spd PDK comparison

There's a lot of threads on the 7-MT vs. 6-MT stating how much better the 6-MT is in comparison. However nothing comparing the 7-PDK to the 8-PDK. I truly believe the 7-PDK will be in the same discussion as the 6-MT when comparing like-for-like transmissions.

I'm trying to figure out what this accomplished for the 992. I guess it shortens the ratios between 1-6, but I can't tell the difference... it can't be for fuel economy adding the 8th gear either... avg. mpg is much lower on the 992 (18/24mpg) vs. 991 (20/29mpg) respectively. So why? It feels like they just dropped the Panamera PDK into the 911. Now that I think about it... it feels like a lot of what started in a Panamera trickled down into the 992. I remember the days when it was just the opposite, the 911 set the bar and trickled into other models

I'm the last one that cares about fuel economy, we don't buy these cars to save gas. That's not what this thread is about. However, I had imagined the 8-PDK was produced to be more "efficient", but it looks to do the opposite. That has always been the Porsche theme, doing more with less; improving the un-improvable.

Having both a 6 speed manual in my GT3T and a 7 speed PDK, I would not call them "like for like." They are totally different driving experiences. Apples and oranges. Both are awesome for different reasons.

It is interesting that the fuel economy is worse in the 992 compared to the 991. It was actually better in the 991 compared to the 997. The weight of the 992 is also greater than the 991. The 991 is lighter than the 997 even though it is bigger. From what I have read in the 992 forum, the 992 does not have the same fuel-saving coast feature that the 991 models have. To me, that is a shame. I know many on RL are not a fan of the auto start/stop feature and I understand why that is, but I do appreciate the coast feature component of auto start/stop when on the highway. It drops the revs in a way that, to me, is not at all obtrusive and it is pretty remarkable how fuel-efficient the NA 991.1 engine is when cruising in normal mode with PDK in automatic mode and with auto start/stop active. I can easily travel 350 miles on a tank of gas when traveling 70-80 miles per hour.

From what I have read, it sounds like the 8th gear on the PDK was in preparation for hybridization. In other words, you are correct, there is no performance improvement with the 8th gear but rather it was added to allow for hybridization in the 992.2. Porsche also added space in the 992 to accommodate for the added equipment/complexity of hybridization.

I didn't mean "like-for-like" comparing a 7spd PDK to a 6spd MT. That would be ridiculous. lol I just meant, when people look back at the MT offerings, they always praise the 6spd MT over the 7spd MT. Just as I believe when people look back at the PDK offerings, they will praise the 7spd PDK over the new 8spd PDK when comparing like-for-like transmissions. If that makes sense.

I have read a lot about the hybridization possibilities, so that might explain a lot when it comes to RND planning.

In regards to the new PDK, it just doesn't make sense why it is less efficient. Maybe others have noticed an improvement in transmission feel, be-it with the "manual" paddle mode or sport/sport+.

I don't feel anything different than having 8th gear at 1100rpm's on the freeway. #boring

I agree with you. I had a brand-new Mustang convertible when I visited Nova Scotia last fall. It was completely soulless but fast. It had, I believe, 10 gears. Paddle shifting was totally boring. I agree with you that the 7 speed PDK is brilliant. I have not tried the 8 speed. Off topic but it will be interesting to see if the 992 GT3 has a seven or eight speed PDK.
