For me, it'd be totally worth it. I literally look at the steering wheel every time I'm in the car and it's a complete eyesore to me.
My daily is a 2015 GTI and the steering wheel in that resembles the 991.2 and is MUCH better looking that the plastic look of the 991.1 wheel.
I'd be getting an alcantara wheel to boot. Love the feel. I have one on my GTI.

Yes that's the piece i'm referring to. I think the stock silver plastic is ugly.

Great suggestions on covering with leather or having painted from bumperplug.com.
