I had originally voted No for a '17 base. The car is in for winter/summer tire swap and installing SOUL Sport Carts, and guess what? They just called me, multi-point inspection found I need a new Water Pump! So add me to the Yes column!

Ok. I finally got my car back from the dealer. It took a week. They had to order the pump and then had to drain the system twice because the air pockets didn't go away on the first go round.

Hi everyone new to the forum and I have a quick question as I'm uncertain regarding an issue which I think might be water pump related but would be good with some input. My car is a 2017 991.2 4S now with 11,500 miles on the clock and I'm aware of the reasons that the oil temp runs higher in normal mode compared to S and S+ mode. During the summer I was seeing around 95 degrees Celsius in N-mode and cruising at times a little higher but not much. Now during the winter with around around zero decrees Celsius and cruising on the motorway this now reaches between 100-110 degrees. In addition when I bring the car to a standstill and the engine idling, I hear this noise that sounds like a pump running but to my ears too loud and with this slight knocking sound (not loud).

I have the car in for service shortly and likely asking Porsche to check anyway but would be very appreciated if someone would be able to help share some light on this.

 

The water pump issue is easily identifiable. First, look for pinkish puddle on the floor under the back of the engine. Second, look for pinkish residue on lower engine parts. Also, sometimes when the engine is running you can see drops of coolant coming from back of the engine. Do a search on this forum for other threads related to this issue for photos. Noises from the pump are generally not a symptom of the pump failure problem.

 

My 2017 991.2S at 10K in 2020 overheated to 117C. Went in to Hull opc, new water pump. Happened again 3 months later, new thermostat. Then again, new water pump again plus the full valve block. No problems now, at a steady 90C. Apparently it's no good replacing just the pump. Need to replace all the valves too once coolant has leaked from pump ito vacuum lines.

 

 

Cheers Peter very appreciated and did you hear an strange noise ? I also used to see around the 90 degree mark hence the current situation seems odd to me but not seen any coolant leakage. The 117 degrees was that during the summer ?

 

First time in Feb, then in Sept and again Nov. Nope no noise or spillage, just warning light saying stop overheating. Shoots up from the normally very steady 90 really quickly. Had it trailered to opc first time. Subsequent times I gave it about 5 minutes to cool off then able to drive off for a while, til it shot up again, then eventually it righted itself and was ok for a while. One clue is that the heater would only blow cold air once it started going above 90 on the display. It was very definitely a sticking valve in the cooling system, which had been corrupted by coolant or air leaking into vacuum system from defective pump. These early 991.2 water pumps are well known for being crap. Luckily I had extended guarantee, the car was 38 months old!!! They fit modified replacements but should have done a recall in my opnion and should honour anyone out of warranty.

Again thanks and will ask them to go over mine as they are doing a few other things and as you say the early pumps seem to be rubbish so to some extend I would rather there was an issue and then getting a new version and peach of mind to be honest.

 

Just remember, if the water pump is defective it is crucial they also replace the full valve block, not just overhaul the vacuum lines and system. I've read this on loads of forums.

There is definitely two things that are occurring here. Seal failure and contamination of the vacuum manifold/switch. The leak in its own is fairly uneventful, we've had the drips since Aug of 2016, but is seems like if the leak is bad enough to cause coolant to be drawn into the vacuum manifold, overheating issues are imminent :/

I think I've seen four different pump part numbers (revisions) pop out in this thread, and none have shown to be failure free so far.
