So for years I hated anything to do with these waterproofing sprays no matter what brand. It was always a mess applying them and I was never really positive on my coverage consistency. Also Im terrible on getting into projects that require detailed prep work. So I have been delaying this job for a while now. After searching for a bit I saw a guy who didnt prep his car at all and used paint brushes to apply it. Well of course Mr No Prep here loved that idea so I went out and got some supplies at Lowes.
The Handy paint cup is really what its named. The magnetic brush holder did come in to play. I started out with the 1 inch angled brush to do all the detail edges around the windows and delicate spots. Then did the larger areas with the 2 inch brush. Once I did the perimeter with the 1 inch I thought Oh let me try the spryer on the big areas, Bad idea as it got all over my hands and I was unable to control the consistency of the application.
A byproduct of using the brush is it can create a little foam which actually turned out to be a good thing. This allowed me to keep track of the treated areas and make sure I was consistent. It took about 40 minutes and I used about 10oz of the 12oz bottle this way. Now I know its possible to do it this way I wont fret about doing it again.
Agree. Last year I used Raggtop. I covered all the windows and taped a lot of stuff. Then I sprayed the top 3 three times letting it dry in between. It didn't protect really well. This year, I went the 303 route and poured the liquid into a cup. I only placed painter's tape along the edge of the targa top. The brush worked great. And like you said, better coverage and I could really get that stuff into the fabric. The end result was better water repellency this time around. Prep time was 1/10 of what it was last year. Win win.
Nice job. I did the same last time only I used a disposable plastic cup and a 99 cent brush. Worked great. I don't know what the hell I was thinking with all that taping and masking I used to do...
I used some old towels and a piece of cardboard as a painters knife with the spray so I did not bother with tape. Took me maybe 10 minutes. Any overspray I wiped off right away and it was fine. Used 303 convertible top.
@B Russ - That convertible top looks GREAT! Thanks for the tip. I did not know that 303 made a Fabric Protector...have used their 303 Plastic Conditioner many times and LOVE the product. About 6 months ago I did my annual RAGGTOP clean & protect process on my 996.2 Cab top...and yes it turned out nicely BUT I am OVER the whole mess of masking off all the glass, paint and plastic areas with a combo of masking tape, newspaper and thin plastic sheeting, etc. Even with all that, I only LATER discovered that the RAGGTOP spray had STILL managed to carry over to our Lexus parked next to it. Can't wait to use your new tried-and-true paint-brush method using the 303 Fabric Protector.
Thanks, Im not sure 303 is much different than the other products out there. I used it only due to experience with my boat canvas in the past. While this is no revelation I have received so much valuable insight here I really wanted to give something back.
