Default Perfect Engine for new 911T

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a3...-gts-flat-six/

Could you imagine if they stuck this in a new T? IMO they wouldn't need to change the HP either...

Almost seems like a no-brainer for Porsche at this point. I was surprised to see that engine in the 718 GTS, my money would have been on a “GT4 touring”. It points toward wider applications for that engine.

I will get in now and say:

1. I still like the torque delivery on the 991T and by all accounts the sound on the new 4.0 isn’t as great as the 9A1 cars.

2. I hope I will actually keep my T, so I don’t care so much about values; I can pile on the miles worry-free

3. Will be interesting to know if the new T will be narrow body or not

It would be nice but is super unlikely to happen IMO. But I'm certainly open to seeing it happen! You have to remember one of the value props of the T in the 992 gen is likely going to be pairing an MT with the base engine. So likely they will stick to that tactic I think.

Looks like Porsche listened for once. I drove the 718 GTS with the 4 cyl engine and hated every moment of it. Horrible, noisy, crude. Everything my 981 Cayman wasn't.

Two years ago, I would have been all over a 911 with this motor. Now, owning the 991.2 T, I feel the 3.0 turbo motor is a gem and I would be sad to see it go.

To be honest, in the Carrera T, that 4.0 would probably be slower than the current base 992.

I will leave judgement about the sound until the North American models arrive. Right now, the sound that we hear in the video clips is from the muted European cars.
I doubt there is going to be a narrow body 992 just for the T. Also, I doubt this engine is going to be in the 992T model, since it seems Porsche has now relegated the T line to upgrades from the base model.
What I may see this engine, though, is connected to a 992.2 hybrid system

Would have agreed 100% until today - suddenly putting the 6 in the 718 GTS seems like a wacky enough to move to indicate that Porsche is seriously re-evaluating their strategy WRT the enthusiast market. I don't think "small upgrades to shift more base models at the end of a run" is a fixed strategy for the T moniker - Porsche's marketing positioning for this car is "affordable enthusiast/puristic 911" -- and although the 991T seems to get glowing reviews from most who have driven one, in terms of general market perception it seems to have been mixed to say the least ... possibly because of the perception it is a marketing ploy that's too close to the base.

This engine would go a long way. Hell... the base 991.1 3.4 engine with a few hundred pounds taken off would have been perfect!

Not sure where they would find "a few hundred pounds" to take off. A vast majority of the weight in these cars is mandatory safety stuff.

So much for the 9A1 being the last of the non-GT NA engines. Looks to me Porsche is going to squeeze the last drop of potential customers who want linear high rpm engines.

Maybe it is the turbo 6 and turbo 4 that may become rare items

992 is larger and heavier than ever, it has given room for the 718 to get bigger and fill in the opening with a proper mid engine sports car it was always meant to be.

bumping the prices up for all models doesn’t hurt either. This gts will easily go over 100k with options. Base 911 will go up soon I’m sure.

would be very hard but
*more lightweight glass(not just the rear)
*lighter wheels
*Remove back seat
*less sound deadening
*less speakers
*CF drive shaft
*exhaust(easily remedied by aftermarket)
*911R 6 speed
*Battery (aftermarket)
*3.4 H6 - this is actually lighter than the 3.0tt by ? due to the elimination of turbos, IC and extra plumbing.

The 991.2 is gone now so it's a mute point and the 991.2T is pretty brilliant as it was IMO but what I described would have been an epic car that would either have been unabtanium limited release or flopped as a seller to masses who buy these new.

As much as the majority of us enthusiast would love that, I do not believe that is how it works today. If they did do it, expect it to be GT3 money if not more.

Thats right. It's not a car that the masses would buy. Its a car that enthusiasts would ****** up in a heartbeat on the secondary market though

Ding Ding Ding! I am actually kinda happy they are bringing it to the GTS lineup and its not just the GT4 now. Gives up more options to play with inthe 2nd hand market. And truthfully speaking, I really enjoy the base engine in the 991.2, being turbo'd, revs plenty (for what it is) and is a monster waiting to be unchained with slight mods. Wont ever get that from this NA 4L.

All I know is that last week, my statement to a buddy was:

“There are not really any new cars out there that interest me right now. I am happy with what is in the garage”

Now... all day today.... my mind has been considering what I need to do to get a Boxster GTS 4.0 and not give up any other cars.
