Compared to my previous 981 Cayman GTS, this "new to me" 991.1 C2 has a much stronger smell post drive. But compared to the 997.2 C2S and 991.1 C2 I've driven before, it seems quite normal.

Yes and no, those toilets, not that function. The one that fakes a flush noise so that you can do your business under the cover of another louder sound. They implemented this in japan and it saved tons of water, as people were previously courtesy flushing with real water. How did we get there ? Oh yeah, the 991 barely smells vs the old cars ;-) On the flip side the old car car stay 6 mo off a battery retainer and go. The 991 is dead after 6 weeks ;-)

I'll be honest i've had 991.1 for almost a year (in march) and i'm still not sure if its the usual smell or a burnt clutch. i don't think i drive it "wrong", same as i did my 997 but yet smells like clutch and not the "hot carrera smell".

If you’re getting a “clutch” smell, that’s different than the hot metal/oil smell you get when you run an engine hard or over long periods.

Clutch smell would concern me as a possible slipping clutch. If your clutch engagement is positive, in a good spot in the pedal travel and no slippage while in gear, maybe you’re just driving it hard and it’s normal.

If you get it all the time regardless of use and you have some miles on it, then maybe clutch maintenance is coming up.

Make sure you aren’t getting brake smell from use and thinking it’s the clutch.

Resurrecting an old thread in the spirit of keeping the forum clean and clutter free..

I have just added a 991.1S to the stable. Glad I found this thread because the smell or hot car/burnt oil was driving me crazy.

Car only has 25K miles, I couldn't find any sources of leaks with my untrained eye, nothing on the floor, no indication of oil usage via gauge, no drop in coolant level...yet no matter how I drove the car, there is a smell that is too
strong to be "normal".. or so I thought (before reading this thread)

Car is still scheduled for a post purchase inspection at the dealer but I feel better after coming across this thread. My cayman S smells nothing like the 991, even with long tube headers, exhaust and tune my cayman smells like a regular car..

You describe a strong smell that sounds abnormal. There could be a leak that isn’t readily visible, striking a hot engine part and burning off before it reaches a visible area or the ground.

IMHO, every time I’ve strongly smelled burnt oil on an ICE, there was a source, usually it was due to a spill or a leak of long standing.

If the smell persists under all conditions, hard or normal, you have a leak.

One thing you could do, smell the engine till you can identify the smell you describe, then open the add oil cap and smell the cap and the tube, if they’re the same it’s an oil issue.
