Brake Service

Brake Service
Hey Guys,
First time need to get brakes changed. A local nearby indi can do the work for $500.
Found rotors + pads from SunCoastParts for $1200.
Is it roughly what is expected to pay for full brakes service? I'm in San Francisco bay area.
My brakes started to squeak recently. Are the OEM pads ceramic? Which pads are more silent?
Thanks,
Ruben

Are you sure you need rotors as well? We just replaced my pads (2016 with 26k miles) only because I wanted pads that didn't dust so bad. Went with Posi-quiets. I believe it was a little over $100 for all 4. It's not a difficult job, but before you spend the money on rotors, I'd make sure they need replacing.

No warning, just squeaking embarrassingly.

Squealing brakes is not an indication that your brakes are worn out. 911 brakes commonly do this, especially if you do mostly mild, low speed braking. You have developed a glaze on your rotors. Do a proper brake bedding procedure to remove the glaze. This involves hard braking from high speed several times. When your brake pads are worn and require replacement you will get a service light on the dash. This happens long before the pads are worn so low as to cause any nasty grinding noises. I would suggest you inspect the pads with a flashlight peering through your wheels before you go and replace everything.

can you give some reference numbers for pads and rotors to check?

And the previous poster is correct about brake squeal. It is a common issue on high performance braking systems.
The best way to tell if your pads need replacing is to remove them and inspect them if you have no history on the car. If your rotors need replacing, a shop should be able to measure them for you. Thickness will be determined by the manufacturer's specs/recommendations.

dealer told me “almost” time as well and pads lasted another 10,000 miles. I say wait until light comes on.

Yes sensors can be reused if not triggered by warn out pads. Warn out pads are less than 2mm thickness. Some pads have ware bars (like tires) that will tell you how much usable pad is left
