Default Ticking during warm up...

I have never noticed (because I have been inside the car), but during start up (outside temperature 39 degrees F) while the car was warming up, there was a ticking noise coming from what I would call the "passengers side bank". The car has 12K miles, just don't know if this is normal until the engine gets to operating temperature or not (I am having trouble uploading the video, but will keep trying).

Normal.

What oil are you using?

Don't let your car sit and idle for warming up. Just start it, wait maybe 45 seconds for it to come off the high idle (to speed up the cats temp for emissions), and then go.

I was the one asking this 2 weeks ago, its common in cooler temps and if the car has been sitting for a while. Next day I started it there was zero ticking

I am using whatever the dealer put in it...I would have to go back and look at the service ticket...also good to know about not letting it idle...I don't drive it in the winter, but do crank it...time for some quick spins around the block.

I let me sit for two weeks while out of town. Fired it up upon return and yep, a loud "ticking" noise until it warmed up. Since then, nothing. All good. Obviously, the fix here is to drive it more!

im sure others will comment so...new oil/ filter before hibernation,( besides other preparations), then leave it alone. Short start ups and or round the block during the winter, not a good idea.

Coupled with the selection of a better oil choice.

Here is a video I made of the sound - it also had bothered me but after reading a dozen posts about it, I have long since relaxed.

Same sound occurs occasionally on my car, which generally sits unused during the week. Recognizing that it is present on many of our cars (and determined as "normal") doesn't mean it is harmless. I kind of think Porsche is blowing off this concern and we don't know the long term effects of what sounds like metal to metal contact for several minutes.

Remember guys, this is a Boxster engine, where the cylinders are horizontal. All Boxster engines do this, Porsche, BMW Motorcycles, Subarus, etc.., because the oil drains out of the tappets due to gravity. Give the engine time to pump some oil around and they will quiet down. Nothing to be alarmed about, every Porsche and BMW Motorcycle I have owned does it.

I advocate driving off immediately, not even waiting 10 seconds. If it’s metal to metal contact due to lack of lubrication, waiting isn’t going to be good for the life of the engine. My car will tick, unless I drive off immediately.
