How old is too old for new tires?

Purchased new winter tires from dealership and now find that one rear is 3 years old, another 5 years old.
I realize they have not been used. But I have also read how tires can degrade over time without using them. Also, no matter we you should be replacing them after a period of time. Starting out with tires that are 5 years old from the beginning seems problematic.
So if this was you, simply accept them? Or ask for replacements?

I’m no expert, but I thought 5 years is about the lifespan of winter tires.
I wouldn’t be happy with a dealer selling 5 year old winter tires to me. If he didn’t know, he should have. If he did, that’s even worse.

Tire Rack’s article on tire age might be useful:https://blog.tirerack.com/blog/hunte...old-is-too-old
Personally I would not be too happy with a dealer that sold me 3 or 5 year old tires.

I would demand new tires to be as fresh as possible, not 5 years old. I could understand tire shops want to deplete all their inventory because it makes business sense, but at your expense. Demand them to change it, as well as doing a full balance.

When I changed my rears , one tire was about 6 months old and the other was almost 2yo. When I asked the dealer about this he said tire rack just sends them whatever they have, obviously trying to get rid of the oldest tires first, and the dealer jus has to accept whatever they get.

And I’ve been agonizing since the Blizzaks on my Tundra are 5 this season (with less than 4000 miles). Guess I’ll keep them on.
Strikes me a little odd since it seems like these “odd” sized tires sell out every year. My dealer had no access to new Alpins so I got Sottozeros for this car.

Very surprised the dealership did not catch it at the time. My guess is they just tried to pass them off. I could see a year old but 3 and 5 yrs old seems a bit beyond. Fronts are from 2019, which is what I would have expected all to be.

Alignment is unrelated to tires.

I've purchased some tires from TireRack at a fantastic discount because they had some age on them. They were very transparent with this info.
After reading this I'm going to pay more attention to the date code when I buy "new" tires.

Aging of rubber in tires is a function of time, temperature and amount of sunlight (UV) received. How and where have these tires been stored? Presumably at room temperature, and indoors out of sunlight. What temperature? How will you use and store them? Presumably not for track events or at Autobahn speeds, because they are Winter tires.
Tires at high ambient and operating temperatures age faster, as do tires on a car parked everyday in sunshine in hot weather. Figure it out for your own situation, relatively speaking. But by all means go to the tire dealer and negotiate some money, or replacements if you need.
this is a common problem.

I would not accept "new" tires that were that old
