Default Removing melted plastic from exhaust

Ran over a plastic bag on the freeway yesterday and now I've got a load of melted crap on the exhaust. Its under the car so not visible but being the **** nut that I am, I'd like to remove it. Any ideas??

Best bet is to heat it back up and wipe it off with something. Obviously being careful not to burn yourself in the process. Good luck! It would make me crazy too!

Polishing soap and aluminum foil. Oven cleaner can work in a pinch.

You know really... If it was just a thin plastic bag, it may just take care of itself after some driving and hot exhaust temps? Or at least get it to the point where it's really easy to flake off?

This. I've had plenty of plastic from clothes, shoes, etc. on bike exhausts. Time solves it.

If you are impatient, you could try a flameless high temp heat gun. That might accelerate the degradation but I would not try wiping off the molten plastic. Just burn (oxidize) it off.

This would allow you the excellent opportunity to get a louder exhaust, and you can explain to the wife it was "for safety reasons".

Hi,

So, on my chrome motorcycle pipes, I would run the bike to heat up the pipe. Spray oven cleaner on a damp towel, not directly on the pipe. You don’t want the over spray to get on your paint. Clean the plastic off with your damp oven cleaner towel. Use a second damp towel to clean off the oven cleaner residue.

This has worked many times without damaging the chrome pipes on my bike.

Hope it helps,

-R

this happened to me and there was a huge glob of melted plastic. Take it out for a nice hour long drive and the brunt of the glob will fall off. But I did have a lingering burnt plastic smell for several weeks.

Try the stuff for flat top kitchen ranges, when it is cold.
