Really? I would not have even considered this for a nano second.

Tipping is just getting out of control....but this takes us way off topic.

I think I tipped $40. He provided really solid driving instruction and tips. Having worked in various service jobs, I appreciate good service when I get it and tip appropriately.

In leisure industries it is common to tip guides, ski instructors , etc. Not sure it applies in this case.

I tipped one of the instructors at Barber PTX because he was friendly/instructive and offered me a ride with him to an included dinner.

If I recall correctly, I tipped the two Atlanta PEC coaches that rode with us when I picked up my car.

I do this when I see that someone goes out of their way to provide outstanding service.

Certainly not required.

I don't think the instructors expect tips, such as a waiter would; however, I am sure they appreciate the ones the get and if someone believes they deserve a tip go for it.

Honestly, I think I would feel that it was offensive to offer a tip in that situation. Not sure exactly why.....but an employee of Porsche and tips just doesn’t feel right to me. Each to their own, of course.

I wouldn't. The school is quite expensive itself and I don't think most instructors would even feel right taking the tip. If someone taught you something that you never would have thought of, or got you to a point where you felt comfortable with something, like heel toe that you never thought you would, I would probably just let them know how much they helped you. I guess you could give them $20, but I still probably wouldn't. Especially at the Porsche Experience center, these are 1 hour drives that you are doing. Not a full on racing school.

Tipping is to compensate for service when someone is working for lower than minimum wage and their job is serving you. Example - you pay the restaurant for the food and tip your waiter to pay for their serving you. When something is transactional like.... I order a coffee and you hand it to me and I leave - NO TIP. If I pay professional rates for a professional's time - NO TIP. Everyone wants tips nowadays and the % seems to rise.

Also, I tip 15% (unless you were really good which is subjective to how I feel); in cash, based on pre tax amount. Seems like the industry tries to make 20% on post tax the norm...

I agree with and practice this.
I was at PECLA last year and certainly didn’t feel that a tip was expected from the instructor.

Thanks for the input, and I decided before all this had come in to not tip at the PECLA I did yesterday. I did the GT3 and at that price decided it would have been inappropriate. The instructor was excellent and all I can say is the GT3 was a beast. Wanted to do the Accelerated course there but you have to have driven something else in PECLA first, with ATL not counting towards that requirement.

I did the accelerated GTS course there and tipped the guy, I think, $80. My wife always thinks I should give more but she is from a restaurant owning family

I did the GT3 at PECLA and I did tip my instructor something $40-60, can’t remember how much exactly. The main reason was that he was a young guy, probably not making a lot at the PEC, and he was a competitor in auto cross. We changed the normal course curriculum to focus on what I wanted and spent almost the entire session lapping the track which I appreciated.
