An all wheel 911 is no fun. Get an Audi at that point. Making a 911 feel and respond far less 911 is not a recipe for 911 funtimez.

 

I've had AWD cars most of my life and loved them. My GTS is RWD and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's all personal preference. I don't live where there's inclement weather. Besides, I have AWD cars for that sort of stuff. If my 911 was a DD and lived where there are 4 seasons, I'd go with an AWD model but the RWD version is what I prefer here in the land of sunshine.

One other thing that nobody has mentioned is that it accelerates faster even though it weighs more. Putting all that power down on the pavement requires all four wheels driven.

I got a C4 only because of the hips. I would have preferred not to have paid the extra cost or add the weight but I love the wide hips.

You don’t need AWD? I just finished a 2 day event at Barber PTX where we had a lot of rain.

The best car in the rain? The AWD Turbo S, according to the majority of the participants, over the rear wheel drive GTS models. We had one of the GTS models spin out and hit the ARMCO with its back end during the second day (rain all day).

I own a C4S 7M that’s an absolute blast to drive in all conditions and handles Florida rain excellently.

If you like your rear drive that’s fine, I won’t knock your choice, but keep an open mind about about other options.

 

Yes, AWD definitely connects better than the RWD for sure. RWDs however provide “fun” driving dynamics that AWD vehicles cannot mimic. I also love the bubbly butt and the GTS checks that box as well.

Driving in the rain is not the measure. That's compromised conditions. Yes, on a slick surface at 7/10ths AWD is better. And maybe that's true for acceleration as well. Two criteria generally not associated with experiencing the joys and dynamics of a rear engine rear drive car. The overly strong opinion voice is said as a spoof of course. Nothing is universal with cars.

 

The only RWD car I have owned in 40 years is my current beach car/ people mover, the 2014 Genesis.

To the OP: if not driving in the slippery, AWD is not preferable. Because it costs more to buy and to run and to maintain, and because it is heavier, AWD is not needed. And I wouldn't want it either.

I thought this thread was about if ‘you needed AWD in a 911 to drive in the snow” not whether AWD was better, faster, more-fun, yada, yada than RWD on <insert pavement condition.>

With snow tires an AWD 911 will out-accelerate a snow-tired RWD 911 on snow.

Braking and cornering on snow-covered roads will be so close to the same that it’s not really worth arguing about.

The AWD 911 will have a slight advantage as a snow plow once there’s more than ~3”s of accumulation.

 

^Its an affliction. There is no other cure other than to drive them a lot and buy more of them. Nothing wrong with 2 or 3 of them.

This statement is not accurate.

 

A steep hill that can be quite slick when snow covered leads to my house in NE PA. On occasion, my 991 C2 could not climb it, even with excellent winter tires. I expect that my recently purchased 991 C4S, with similar tires, will prove more capable. We shall see.
